British/America, Trade Fowler/Fusil, Cal: .56 (26 Ga), MFG: 1810's-1850's, Flintlock smoothbore, 51'' barrel.
HISTORY: This is a shotgun (Fowler) that was made by a gunsmith in America with a bought British barrel & Warranted lock. it has a oversized trigger & trigger guard to allow two fingers on the trigger, & a crudely made slender & light stock, commonly found on trade guns sold to Native Americans, but they were usually made with shorter barrels, not as long as this one.
CONDITION: The straight wrist wood full stock is good. it's darkened from added oils over time. There is a 1 '' hairline crack on the bottom of the wrist, emanating from the lower tang. A couple small cracks & chips around side plate & lock plate inlets. Two more small cracks at the tip of the forend, emanating from the barrel channel. There are a couple cracks/grain pops & some scuffs at the toe of the buttstock, as well as a crack on the comb, emanating from the upper extension of the buttplate. There is a visible gap between the heel of the buttstock & the corner of the upper extension of the buttplate. The iron has complete toned to a chocolate brown patina & is covered in heavy pitting scars & roughness. The left side of the barrel has two worn Post 1813 British, Birmingham proof house proofs, & a worn ''50'' mark, this should the bore measurement in gauge/bore but does not match the actual bore. The lock has faint remains of a ''WARRANTED'' marking, partially worn away. The inside of the lock, on the tail end is stamped ''5'', has a ring-neck cock, & the lock has bridles inside & out. The bore is poor, dark with rust & pitting. The barrel holds a wide blade front sight. The stock carries a iron buttplate, it's thin, toned to a chocolate brown patina, & covered in pitting scars. Does not have any sling mounts. Has a iron ramrod & based on how it fits in the ramrod thimbles its original to the gun. Mechanical function appears fine, locks into half & full cock & the trigger releases the hammer with no binding. Antique/ Muzzleloader, No FFL Req. - Value: 1500 to 3000
