Description

Henry Nock, 1771 East India Company Windus pattern Brown Bess & Bayonet Fusil, Cal: .66, MFG: 1779, S/N: None, Flintlock smoothbore, 37 1/8'' barrel.

HISTORY: The East Inda was initially set up in 1600 as a trading company in India to trade with Britain. They gradually gained political & military power to the point of having a larger standing army than Mainland England & having their own designed & made guns. Guns bought by them don't bear any English crowns & have their own heart logo on the lock & barrel. The East India Company adopted a simplified pattern of the brown Bess, originally designed General Lawrence for the company then simplified by LT. Colonel Edwars Windus & adopted in 1771, this pattern of Brown Bess featured a 39'' barrel making them cheaper to produce & easier to handle. Britan would copy this model with the pattern 1796 Brown Bess & where it's got its name as the ''India pattern''. In 1813 the East India company had its monopoly over India revoked & many other trading companies would be set up hurting their profits. In 1833 the company would transition from a commercial to a managing role, & in 1857 Resentment over the company for their rule over India caused a Rebellion. They would slowly keep losing power until 1874 when it was dissolved after over 300 years of operation. The east India Company was one of if not the largest, longest lasting, & most powerful company in history only rivaled by entire nations. A great number of these guns were captured during the war of 1812 by American privateers & were sent back to the states to arm militia & other units.

CONDITION: The straight wrist wood stock is good as being lightly sanded to clean & oiled. Combined with stock shrinkage & the light sanding, the metal is proud to the wood around the buttplate, wrist medallion, tangs, & lock. Stock has some still has some nicks, dings, & dents from use/age. There is a small crack at the front of the lock plate cutout, & a couple repaired cracks around the left side, side plate. The metal has toned to a dark brown patina with roughness from pitting across the entire barrel & lock. Most markings are faded from wear. The barrel is marked ''NOCK 1779'' the east India company heart logo (mostly gone), a crown over crossed ''C'' & ''P'' proof, crown over ''HN'' proof, crown over ''W'' proof, & a crown over ''V'' proof. The lock plate is marked ''1779'' over the East India Company heart logo, ''NOCK'', & a crown over ''W'' proof. The crown ''W'' proof is for Edward Windus, & the crown ''HN'' proof is for Henry Nock. The bore is fair, dark with roughness but no deep pitting spots, one spot of some pitting nearing the nearing of the muzzle. barrel is thin out at the muzzle. The stock carries a brass buttplate, has a crack in the upper extension. It has both sling loops & a ramrod. Gun comes with a Daniel Moore & East Inda Company marked socket bayonet. dated 1779 & marked for a Fusil, they were lightened muskets used by officers, NCO's & artillery crews. The bayonet has toned to a mix of brown patina & gun metal gray with roughness, pitting, rust, & ding marks across the bayonet. Mechanical function is fine, solid clicks into half & full-cock but the hammer does have some play back & forth, trigger releases hammer with no binding. Antique/Muzzleloader, No FFL Req - Value: 1500 to 3000
