Description

Harpers Ferry, M1822 Musket (M1816 Type II), percussion converted, Cal: .69, MFG: 1834, S/N: None, Percussion musket, 28'' barrel.

HISTORY: The M1822 Musket was a continuation of the M1816 musket, sometimes referred to as the M1816 type II, or sometimes still referred to as the M1816 in older documents. The Biggest change from the M1816 is the attachment of the rear sling swivel, now attached to the trigger guard & not a stud on the trigger guard tang. Lots of these rifles would be converted to percussion & rifles by both the military & by civilians after they were surplused. Converted M1822 & original smoothbore flintlocks were used on both sides of the civil war, mainly during the beginning when percussion rifles were in short supply. Most of these would stay as smoothbore because most of the barrels were too thin to be bored with rifling & still be strong enough to contain the blast. The later M1840, still a smoothbore flintlock, was made with thicker barrel in anticipation of rifling them later, these were the majority of the smoothbores that were converted to rifles. After the civil war the Government was quick to sell off their obsolete muzzleloaders & begin upgrading them with metallic cartridge breechloaders, flooding the market with cheap surplus guns. Many were bought up cheap & converted to fit the use of the owner. This musket has a after marked replaced hammer & been cutdown into a short rifle with the military hardware moved back on the stock.

CONDITION: The straight wrist wood stock is poor, has a complete stock break through the bottom of the stock, just at the forward tip of the lock plate. Metal is proud to the wood around the buttplate from wood shrinkage/wear. Small hole in the bottom of the right stock flat, between the trigger & rear tip of lock plate. chunk of stock missing at the top of the wrist to the right of the barrel tang. No visible cartouches on the stock. The metal has toned to a brown patina with some roughness across the metal, mainly concentrated at the rear of the barrel by the nipple. Most markings are faded from wear/rust. The left side of the barrel marked ''V'' over ''P'' over a eagle's head. The barrel tang is marked ''1834''. The lock plate is marked ''HARPERS'' over ''FERRY'' over ''1834'', & a American great eagle. The replaced aftermarket hammer has ornamental engraving. The bore fair. Slightly bright, has roughness & light pitting. The front barrel band holds a brass front sight. The stock carries a iron buttplate, toned brown with roughness. It has both sling loops but is missing a ramrod. Hammer does not function properly, hammer does not cock back. A old military musket that shows her hard use after the war on the American frontier. Antique/Muzzleloader, No FFL Req. - Value: 200 to 400
