Norwich Arms Company, M1861 Rifled Musket, Cal: .58, MFG: 1863, S/N: None, Percussion rifle, 39 7/8'' barrel.
HISTORY: This rifle is the Updated version of the M1855 Rifled Musket, it eliminated the Maynard tape priming system which was un-reliable & expensive & went back to the percussion cap & Nipple system. The M1861 was the primary & most common rifle used by the union during the Civil war. Production would start at Springfield only but with growing demand from the war 20 other private manufacturers would be given contracts to make rifles. Norwich Arms Co. of Norwich Conn was one of the companies to get contracts & would make 25,000 Model 1861 Rifles from 1863-65. Norwich only make M1861 rifles never switched to the M1863 pattern. The stock on this rifle is marked by the Welch, Brown & Co. of Norfolk Ct, They received a contact for 18,000 rifles around the same time as Norwich, possibly the stock was supplied to Norwich by them or its a replacement.
CONDITION: The straight wrist black walnut stock is very good with light nicks, dings, & dents from use/age. The left flat of the stock marked ''W.W. WELCH'' over ''NORFOLT, CT'', & with a worn inspector's initials cartouche. The metal has toned to a mix of gun metal gray & brown patina. The left barrel flats marked ''GT'', ''V'' over ''P'' over a eagle's head. The top barrel flat marked ''1863''. The lock plate is marked ''1863'', a American great eagle, ''U.S.'' over ''NORWICH''. All three barrel bands marked ''U''. The upper extension of the buttplate is marked ''US''. The bore is good. It's bright with strong rifling, but has roughness in the grooves throughout the bore. Ther barrel holds a barley corn front sight with a three leaf, flip-up U-notch rear sight. The stock carries a steel buttplate, toned brown with light roughness. Rifle has both sling loops & a metal ramrod. Mechanical function appears fine. Solid audible clicks into half & full-cock, trigger drops hammer freely with no binding. A nice example of a private contract made, standard civil war arm. Antique/Muzzleloader, No FFL Req - Value: 1200 to 2400
