Springfield Armory, M1873 Trapdoor, Cal: 45-70, MFG: 1874, S/N: 3984, Single shot breech loading rifle, 29 1/2'' barrel.
CONDITION: The straight wrist American black Walnut stock is very good near excellent as being lightly sanded & re-finished. Stock does have a few minor nicks & dings from use/age, as well some scuffing at the toe. There is a very faint ''P'' in circle firing proof on the bottom of the wrist. Heel of the stock marked with a very faint ''35'' stamp. The metal has worn to a gun metal gray with speckled brown patina. The Metal has stock lacquer over it. Rear of the receiver marked with the S/N. Top of breech block marked ''MODEL'', ''1873''. Over a eagles head, over crossed arrows, over ''US''. The ''V'' over ''P'' over a eagles head stamp on the chamber is heavily worn & barely visible. The lock plate is marked with a American great eagle, ''U.S.'', ''SPRINGFIELD'', markings are faded. The upper extension of the buttplate marked with a stamped over ''68'', & ''45''. The bore is good. Its bright & shiny with roughness & thinned rifling. The Barrel carries a worn barleycorn front sight with a notched ramp/ladder V-notch rear sight. The base is marked 1 to 5, & the ladder is marked 5 to 11. The stock carries a steel buttplate, toned to a mix of gun meta gray, brown patina & thinned finish. Rifle has both bottom sling loops with the third stacking swivel. Rifle has the cleaning/clearing rod. Rifle comes with the correct ''U.S.'' marked, blued socket bayonet. Second Year of Manufacture & is one of the first 4000 of over 560,000 trapdoor Springfields made. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 600 to 1200
