Springfield Armory, Model: 1884 trapdoor, Cal: .45-70, MFG: 1888, S/N: 406787, Single shot breech loading rifle, 32 1/2'' barrel.
CONDITION: The straight wrist American black walnut stock is very good near excellent, but has some nicks, dings, & scratches. stock has added oil/finish. Metal to wood fitment is solid & the wood doesn't appear to have been sanded or seen heavy wear. Left side of the wrist stamped ''SWP'' over ''1889'' in a box inspector/acceptance cartouche. Metal has been re-blued/re-finished. The blued finish on the barrel rates 92% with spots of light thinning, light scratches & wear at the muzzle. The blued finish on the receiver rates 90% with spots of light thinning & some roughness under the finish. The breech block & rear barrel tang retain faded case-hardened finish with spots toning brown. The inside of the breech block retains deep case-hardened finish. The lock plate has full blue coverage with spots of thinning. The top of the breech block is marked ''US'', ''MODEL'', ''1884''. The rear of the receiver is stamped with the S/N, stamp is faded. The chamber is marked V over ''P'' over a eagles head, ''P'', ''A'', some marking slightly faded from re-blue job. The lock plate is marked with a American Great eagle stamp, ''U.S.'', ''SPRINGFIELD'', markings are slightly faded from re-blue. Upper extension of the buttplate marked US''. Both barrel bands marked ''U''. Oval knurling on hammer, serrated trigger, & has the ''three-click'' action. The bore is excellent. Bright & Mirror like with little visible wear. The barrel holds a small blade front sight with a Buffington, U-notch ladder rear sight. The stock carries a blued steel buttplate, mix of gun metal gray & blue. The rifle has both bottom sling swivels & the third stacking swivel. The rifle has the cleaning/clearing rod. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 700 to 1400
