Springfield Armory, M1896 Krag Carbine, Cal: .30-40 Krag, MFG: 1896, S/N: 46575, Bolt action rifle, 22 1/8 barrel.
HISTORY: The M1896 Krag is the Second generation of US Krag rifles. The Krag-Jorgensen Rifle, Designed by Norwegian Gun designers O H J Krag, & E Jorgensen. It was adopted in 1892 by the US after testing other guns from the leading gun designers at the time like Mauser, Lee, Mannlicher, & Schmidt-Rubin. It was designated the M1892 Rifle. The Majority of M1892 Krags were rifles & a carbine version was never formally adopted, only 2 prototypes are known to have been made. M1896 implemented many changes from complaints to M1892, mainly by moving the cleaning rod to the buttstock, an improved rear sight & tighter tolerances in production increasing the accuracy. It was also the first model with a carbine version. Just over 61,000 rifles would be made & 22,400 Carbines would be made before the updated model of 1898, which is the most common.
CONDITION: The straight wrist Black Walnut stock is very good near excellent, with some light nicks, dings & scratches. bottom of the wrist has a faded 40 stamp. The barrel has toned to a mix of gun metal gray, brown patina, & thinned blue finish with spots of roughness near the muzzle, rust emanating from under the front sight base. The Blued metal finish on the receiver rates 50%, mostly remining in protected areas with spots that are regularly rubbed worn gray with brown patina setting in. Most of the remaining blue is deep & beautiful. The magazine gate is worn gray & the left side magazine cover is covered in roughness, does not match the condition of metal around it, likely a replaced part. Left side of the receiver marked U.S., MODEL 1896., SPRINGFIELD ARMORY., & the S/N. The barrel band marked U. The bore is very good. Its bright & shiny with light roughness throughout. The barrel holds a blade front sight with a U-notch ladder/ramped base rear sight. Base marked 3 to 6, ladder marked 7 to 18. The stock carries a steel trapdoor buttplate, toned to a mix of gun metal gray & brown patina. Has the correct three-piece steel cleaning rod inside. These carbines were carried in a scabbard on the horse not a sling & has no sling mounts. A very nice example of a early Krag carbine. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 1500 to 3000
