RARE!! Remington/ Savage Revolving Arms Co., Type 1 Split-Breech Rolling block Carbine (Old Model), Cal: .46 RF, MFG: 1864-65, S/N: 3136, Single shot breech loading rifle, 20'' barrel.
HISTORY: This rifle was Remington earliest production metallic cartridge rifle; it was the precursor to the Rolling block as we know it today. There were two variations made, a large frame in .50 Cal, & a small frame in .46 RF. The US would give Remington a contract for 1,000 of these carbines in March of 1864, this would be bumped up to 5,000 in December of 1864. Remington as this time was busy making M1863 revolvers & other rifles for the military & did not have the production space for these carbines, so they subcontracted out the production to the Savage Revolving Arms Co. in Middletown Ct, but the guns were only marked Remington. Neither the rifles or carbines would arrive in time for use in the civil war. Remington would re-purchase 3600 of the carbines from the government & sold them to France for use during the Frano-Prussian war of 1870.
CONDITION: The two-piece straight wrist Walnut stock is very good to good with some chips to the top edges of the forend. The left side of the wrist has a sunken, illegible inspectors cartouche, & a worn ''P'' stamp. The metal has mostly toned to an even chocolate brown patina, metal has spots of light roughness, & tool ding marks by the chamber, receiver band, & around the pins in the frame from disassembly & reassembly. The wrist upper wrist tang is marked with the ''REMINGTON'' two-line address ending in ''NOV.16, 1864'', & a ''D'' inspector stamp. The lower tang, upper extension of buttplate & left side of the receiver marked ''D'' as well. Left side of the chamber stamped ''J''. The barrel under the barrel band is stamped ''P D J''. The left front of the receiver stamped with the S/N. Bottom of the barrel has other markings obscured by the protruding mainspring. Barrel band marked ''A''. rear sight leaf marked ''L''. The bore is good. Its bright with light roughness throughout & a couple spots of concentrated roughness near the throat of the rifling. Barrel holds a Barleycorn front sight with a flip-up L-leaf V-notch rear sight. Three marked notches, ''1'', ''3'', ''5''. The buttstock carries a steel buttplate, it has spots of roughness & toned to a mix of brown patina & gun metal gray. Rifle has left side of receiver mounted sling bar & ring. A nice complete example of the scarce Remington split breech rolling block. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 3000 to 6000
