ULTRA-RARE!!!, Remington/ Ingersoll, model: Rolling block Ingersoll Life-Line gun, Cal: .44-40, MFG: 1886, S/N: None, single shot breech loading rifle, 12'' barrel.
HISTORY: Norm Flayderman describes this gun on page 158 of the ''Flayderman guide''. Patented in 1885/86 by Simon Ingersoll, they used the unique, Remington No.1 New York type action that resets the hammer to half-cock when the breech is closed & have a nickel-plated solid brass buttstock that's very heavy. Ingersoll advertised these guns to Fire departments, seaside resorts, boats, & even to be used as a harpoon gun in seal & whale fisheries. Factory records show that at least 25 were made for the Hill & stover, N.Y. in 1888, one was made in 1895, & 28 were made in 1899. Production number & date information is limited & some sources conflict with each other. Included with the rifle is a copy of a old advertisement for the gun from 1886. This operated by having a steel sleeve slip over the barrel with a rope attached to the sleeve & trigger guard loop. It used .44-40 Blanks & has a smooth bore barrel.
CONDITION: the straight wrist, nickel plated solid brass buttstock is very good, has some scratches & dings as well as some nickel flacking/chipping & pealing around the butt end corners & corners of the wrist. The buttstock retains about 96% of its nickel finish. The right side of the wrist is marked with the patent dates ''DEC.8.1885'', ''SEPT.7.1886''. The case-hardened finish on the receiver retains about 75% coverage with common wear spots thinned/toning to a brown patina. receiver has a light speckling of surface rust. The barrel is bare steel & has a rust/patina speckling. The left side of the receiver is marked ''REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILLION N.Y.''. The bore is very good. bright &* shiny with a couple spots of roughness. Rifle comes with two of the sleeve projectiles. Stock has no buttplate. A unique & rare collectors piece with a interesting use. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 5000 to 10000
