Description

E. Remington & sons, Costa Rica contract, Egyptian Transformed Spanish model No.1 Rolling block, Cal: .43 Spanish, MFG: 1874-78, S/N: 2536, Single shot breech loading rifle, 33 7/8'' barrel.

HISTORY: This Rolling block started out as a model 1874 Egyptian model rifle in .43 Egyptian. Between 1878 and 1882, Remington had no customers for left-over Egyptian contract rifles. They would trim the barrel down slightly to 33.875 so they could ream the chambers to accept the .43 Spanish cartridge which was far more popular at this point. Because the barrels were trimmed slightly one IDing mark is the rear sight being only 1'' from the receiver. The S/N on the side of the receiver was applied in Costa Rica when it arrived. These serial numbers include other rifles used by Costa Rica & were not in their own range just for rolling blocks. Costa Rica ordered 1800 Rolling blocks with the majority not having Bayonet lugs as they used a socket bayonet, however about 500 had a short bayonet lug for mounting a sword bayonet. The stock on this rifle is marked with the personal info of a US civil war soldier. The Cosigner states that its for ''Alvin C. Hornsby'', who was a soldier of fortune (mercenary) in Costa Rica & carved his initials & civil war unit information into the stock.

CONDITION: The two-piece straight wrist wood stock is very good to good with various nicks, dings, dents, & scratches from use/age. The left cheek of the stock is hand scratched ''11th MASS'', ''1864''. The right side of the forend is hand carved ''A C''. the left side of the wrist has a faint ''HBH'' in box cartouche. The metal has worn to a gun metal gray with speckled patina & spots of roughness. More roughness/pitting around the stock line of the barrel & receiver. The upper tang is marked with the three-line ''E. Remington & Sons'' address ending in 1874. Right side of the receiver has the costa Rican applied S/N. Left side of the receiver marked ''H''. The left side of the chamber marked with a ''B'' proof. Bayonet stud marked ''H''. all three barrel bands marked ''U'', middle band is loose. The bore is good. Its bright & shiny with light roughness throughout, & spots of deeper roughness halfway through the bore & up. The barrel holds a worn barleycorn front sight with a stepped base/ladder V-notch rear sight. Base marked 1 to 4, ladder marked 6 to 10. The stock carries a steel buttplate, has light patina speckling & light roughness. Rifle has both bottom sling loops & the cleaning/clearing rod. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 700 to 1400
