E. Remington & Sons, M1874 Argentine Rolling block saddle ring carbine, Cal: .43 Spanish, MFG: 1874-80's, S/N: None, 20 1/2'' barrel.
History: Originally designed by Leonard M. Geiger in 1863, then improved by a Remington employee Joseph Rider in 1864. The Remington rolling block would begin production in 1866. These rifles were world renowned & loved as they were cheap, simple to operate, & effective. By 1872, Remington would be making 1,000 Rolling blocks a day, & nearing it end of production in the 1880s over 1.5 million would be made.
CONDITION: the two-piece wood stock is good as having a large wood fill repair on the wrist, repair is tight & appears to be arsenal done. There is a 1 1/2'' crack on the left side of the wrist, & two more cracks around the tip of the forend. The metal has toned to a mix of dark brown patina & gun metal gray. Roughness/cleaned pitting across most of the receiver, more on the barrel but not as deep. The receiver tang is marked with the ''E. REMINGTON & SONS'' three-line address ending in ''1874'', marking is partial obscured/worn off from roughness & wear. The top of the chamber is marked ''E.N.'', stands for ''Ejercito Nacional'' (National Army). A small ''F'' & the assembly number ''71837'' marked on the left upper & lower tangs of the action. The bore is good. Its bright with some spots of roughness. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a L-leaf flip up V-notch rear sight. The stock carries a steel buttplate, tones brown with roughness & light dings. Rifle has a left side receiver mounted sling ring. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 700 to 1400
