Updated Description 8/19/25: Carl Gustafs Stads Gevarsfaktori (Sweden), Model 1864/68/85 rolling block artillery carbine., Cal: 12.7x44mm CF MFG: 1869, S/N: 2777, Single shot breech loading rifle, 18 1/8'' barrel.
HISTORY: in the 1860s Sweden was looking to upgrade their muzzleloaders to Breech loading firearms. They first found this in 1864 with gun maker & master armorer at Stockholm Sweden, A.F. Hagstrom. It was a Needle-fire conversion of their M1860 Wrede rifle. About 16,000 rifles would be converted or made from 1864-67 before Sweden would adopt the Remington Rolling block system in May of 1867. Most of the M1860/64 rifles would be converted over to the rolling block action & they would be designated M1864-68 rifles. Starting in 1885, most of the M1864-68 rifles would be converted into carbines for artillery & fortress use. These are designated the M1864/68/85 Rifle. These would be used before being replaced in 1894 by the M1894 Mauser Carbine. In military service these guns were rim fire, however when they were surplused on the civilian market, people wanted to use them in military style shooting matches. With being rimfire & a obsolete round at this point the ammo was expensive for farmers & target shooters. The fix for this was to convert the rifle over to CF so you could reload the cases. Most rifles that were sold on the civilian market were converted over to CF by gunsmiths. The new cartridge was exactly the same dimensions & only changed the ignition, allowing them to use the original sights & only modify/replace the breech face block. More rifles were converted over rather than carbines, as the target shooters preferred the longer rifles, but carbines were converted like the one here.
CONDITION: The two-piece straight wrist wood stock is excellent as being lightly sanded & re-finished. Metal is proud to the wood around the buttplate. All stock markings are faded/worn. The right cheek of the stock is marked ''1865'' (marking is faded & hard to rear). Right side of the wrist marked ''1869'', left side marked with the SN. Right side of the forend is marked ''1888'' (date it was converted into a M1864/68/85), & the two inspectors initials of ''J.B'' & ''JG''. Left side of the forend marked with the S/N. the left cheek of the stock has a brass unit disc marked ''7R.'' over ''B.'' over ''No.308''. This was rifle #308 of the 7th infantry regiment & was issued to a conscripted soldier. The blued finish on the barrel rates 80% with spots of wear/thinned blue toning to a brown patina. The receiver was worn to a gun metal gray, with light cleaned roughness dotted around. The left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N. right side marked with a crown over ''C'' for Carol Gustafs, over ''1869''. The chamber is marked with the S/N on the left & the two inspectors initials on the top of ''J.B'' & ''JG''. The bore is very good near excellent. Its bright & shiny with strong rifling but has a couple spots of light roughness. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight, with a stepped base/ladder V-notch rear sight marked ''250'', ''300'', ''350'' on the base & 4 to 7 on the ladder. The stock carries a brass buttplate. Starting to tone with patina, has some light dings & scratches. S/N marked on the upper extension of the buttplate. The rifle has cleaning/clearing rod. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 600 to 1200
