Remington, Model: No.1 rolling block, M1868 Egyptian contract, Cal: .43 Egyptian, MFG: 1868-76, S/N: NVSN, Breech loading single shot rifle, 35 1/8'' barrel.
HISTORY: Egypt would place an order of 60,000 No.1 rolling blocks in .43 Egyptian in 1868. Before the order could be delivered, Egypt (which had had close ties with the French since the Napoleonic excursions and the building of the Suez canal), ''defaulted'' on the contract so that a large part of the order could be sold to France, since they were fighting the Franco-Prussian war at the time & were in dire need of arms. Its estimated that 13,000 rolling blocks were delivered to France at that time. After the war ended in 1871, Egypt would place the same order again & the last of the 60,000 rifles were delivered in 1876. Remington was already making rolling block for the Spanish in .43 Spanish, but governments at that time considering it a matter of national prestige to field arms with proprietary cartridges, so Egypt wanted their own cartridge. It was based on the .43 Spanish cartridge.
CONDITION: The two-piece straight wrist walnut stock is good. stock has been worn down in spots from time & use. Stock has added layers of oil/finish. 1 1/2'' chip repair on the bottom left of the wrist. The Metal has a old re-blue. The blued metal finish rates 35% overall with most areas toned to a brown patina. A few spots of light roughness dotted around the metal. The upper tang Remington address is mostly worn away with faint remains on the bottom right of the stamping. The left side of the chamber is stamped ''H'', partially faded. The top of the chamber is marked with many Arabic markings. The bore is fair. It is bright but has some roughness, worn rifling & the rifling at the muzzle has worn smooth. The barrel holds a worn barleycorn front sight with a stepped base/ladder V-notch rear sight. Base range markings worn away, only visible marking on ladder is the 6. Replaced ladder spring. The stock carries a steel buttplate, has brown patina, rust & light roughness. The buttplate edge over the Heel of stock has been worn through showing wood. The rifle has both bottom sling loops & the cleaning/clearing rod. rifle has a brass hangtag on the trigger guard marked ''100''. This rifle shows heavy use wear of a long time, likely almost 100 years of service/use. Only if this rifle could tell the stories of what it saw. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 400 to 800
