HISTORY: In the 1890s, Remington would make Millions of 7x57mm Rolling blocks for export, mainly to Southern America. They would use up old stock, spare parts, & convert older rifles to this new pattern. This receiver is a No.1 based on the patent dates on the tang & the filled screw hole on the left side of the receiver, most likely made for Spain or Egypt in .43 Caliber. These 7mm Rolling block would see lot of use by many different nations over the years. During WW1 Britian bought a couple thousand 7mm Rolling blocks from Remington That were overproduction from earlier contracts & used them for clearing mines on boats.

CONDITION: The straight wrist wood is good with various nicks, dings, dents, scratches & wear from use/age. There is a 1/2'' crack on the bottom of the wrist that emanates from the receiver tang. A 1'' hairline crack on the right of the wrist. The upper handguard has a 3'' crack emanating from the rear sight cutout. Some moisture damage & chips around the buttplate. The right cheek of the stock has a cutout for a round unit disc. Faint remains of numbers that were scratched into both sides of the wrist. The receiver has a old re-finish. The metal has mostly toned to a dark brown patina with some remains of finish on the receiver. There is some pitting on the barrel around the stock line. The Receiver tang is marked ''REMINGTON ILLION N.Y. U.S.A.'', ''PAT. MAY 3D NOV .16TH 1864 APRIL 17TH 1866''. The right side of the receiver & hammer are marked with a German crown over ''U'' proof stamp, marking is old & faded. The left side of the receiver has a factory hole fill just before the receiver band edge. This was done at Remington when it was converted into a No.5. The bore is very good near excellent. Bright & shinny with strong rifling, but has some light roughness. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a stepped base, flip-up ladder V-notch rear sight. Elevator on ladder is missing.
