P. Stevens, Maastricht Netherlands, M1871// Beaumont-Vitali, Cal: 11 x 52mmR (.43 Dutch), MFG: 1877, converted 1890, S/N: 4220, bolt action rifle, 32 1/2'' barrel.
HISTORY: in the 1860s, the Netherlands saw all the other European nations start adopting breech loading rifles. the Dutch Officials wanting to modernized would start converting their muzzleloaders into breechloader with the Snider-Enfield system starting in 1867. They would trial many different single shot rifle designs from around the world, & in 1870 they would select Edouard de Beaumont's rifle, where it would be adopted in 1871. Later in 1888, wanting to modernized their military again, these rifles would be upgraded with a Vitali Magazine, along with a multitude of other smaller things.
CONDITION: The straight wrist wood stock is very good as having a added layer of finish over the top. Stock has some nicks, dings, dents, & scratches from use/age. There is a 1 1/2'' tight crack on the bottom of the forend, emanating from the magazine cutout. Right cheek of the stock has the Netherland acceptance roundel cartouche that reads ''MAASTRICHT'' over a crown over ''W'' & ''1877'' inside. One more faded cartouche on the right cheek, just before the wrist, & two more faded cartouches on the top of the wrist. The metal has worn to a gun metal gray with speckled patina/light rust. Magazine has toned to a dark patina with roughness. Left side of the receiver marked ''P.STEVENS'', ''MAASTRICHT'', & proof marks. Receiver band is marked ''S'', & the assembly number ''31''. Left side chamber flats are marked with the S/N, ''1877'', & two proof marks. The top & right side chamber flats have many more proof marks. Upper buttplate extension marked with the magazine conversion date ''1890'' & the S/N. All bolt assembly number marked parts match ''31''. The bore is good. bright with strong rifling but has spots of roughness. The barrel holds a tall barleycorn front sight with a tangent V-notch rear sight marked 3 to 18 on the base. The stock carries a steel buttplate. has light roughness & gray patina. Rifle has both sling loops. Has a cleaning/clearing rod, does not appear to be period correct. Rifle comes with the correct socket bayonet. Toned to a chocolate brown patina, S/N ''K810''. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 300 to 600
