Royal Small Arms Factory Enfield, Mark IV Martini-Henry, Nepalese Issue, Cal: .577/450 MH, MFG: 1886, S/N: B3010, Lever action single shot breech loading rifle, 33 1/8'' barrel.
HISTORY: The Mark IV Martini-Henry came to be from the British experimenting with the .402 Enfield-Martinis. However Britian would decide to go with the .303 Lee-Metford magazine rifle, instead of pursuing the .402 Martini which left large numbers of odd caliber guns in British hands. The Older .455 Cal Martini-henrys were still in wide service so Britian chose to converted the .402 Martini-Enfields into .455 Martini-Henrys by re-barreling them & using the Martini-Enfield parts, making the MK IV Martini-Henry. The mark IV brings the most changes to the design, most notable the operation lever was lengthened by 5 inches, & the receiver was rounded, cut down and sloped at the back to improve the grip of the rifle. There were three variants of the Mark IV produced, denoted A, B, & C. The A & B variants are conversions of the original .402 Martini-Enfields. The C Variant was made from either a mix of new & old parts, or entirely of new production parts just for the Mk. IV not the .402 Martini-Enfield. B & C Variants also have a distinct ramp style front sight, while the A variant & older Martini-Henry models have a barleycorn front sight. Approximately 100,000 Mk IV rifles were made, all being made/converted at Enfield between 1887-89. This rifle sold & used by Nepal & bears the Marking in Nepalese ''Chandra'', for Field-Marshal Maharaja Sri Teen Sir Chandra Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana, the prime minister of Nepal from 1901 to 1929, showing it was bought during his time. It also bears the markings showing it was decommissioned at the Rawalpindi Arsenal in Pakistan & sold to Nepal in 1908, lining up with the other marking.
CONDITION: The two-piece wood stock is very good with added layers of finish/oils over time. Arsenal wood repair with a wood chip along the top of the wrist, where it meets the receiver. The right cheek of the stock is marked ''CHANDRA'' in Nepalese in a box, over ''4313'' (rack or armory number). To the right of that is ''R.P.'' over ''3'' over ''1908''. Under those markings is another heavily faded set of markings that are illegible. The metal has toned to a mix of gun metal gray & brown patina with thinned remains of blue remining near the chamber & protected areas. the right side of the receiver is marked with a crown over ''V.R'', ''ENFIELD'', ''1886.'', small crown with arrow proof'', ''I.V.'', ''1.''. Left side of the receiver is marked with British proofs, in the top left corner. Left side of the chamber marked with many British proofs & the S/N, right side marked with more proofs. The barrel bands, trigger guard, trigger guard tang, lever arm, & buttplate are marked with more proofs. S/N mismatched rear sight. The bore is very good near excellent. Bright & shiny with string rifling, but has spots of light roughness near the muzzle. The barrel holds a Barleycorn front sight on a ramp base, & a tangent ladder V-notch rear sight marked 100 to 400 on the base, & 5 to 12 on the ladder. The buttstock carries a steel buttplate, toned to a mix of gun metal gray & brown patina. rifle has both bottom sling loops & a cleaning/clearing rod. A interesting & well-traveled Martini-Henry. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 600 to 1200
