London Small Arms Co. LTD, No.2 Mk. IV*, Canadian Service, Cal: .22 LR, MFG: 1914, Converted to trainer: late 1920s, S/N: L88943, bolt action rifle, 25 1/4'' barrel.
HISTORY: This rifle started as a SHTLE Mk.3 (No.1 Mk.3), made as the London Small Arms Co. in 1914. It was converted to a No.2 Mk.IV* .22 trainer some time in the 1920s by replacing the barrel, converting the bolt to fire RF cartridges, & removing the magazine internals. New B.S.A. made barrel, not sleeved. This rifle was used by Canada being fitted with a Cooey 10a Rear sight. This was the same rear sight used on Canadas own Ross rifle, but by this time the Ross was replaced in mainline service by the No.1 MK.3 SMLE which has a barrel mounted notch rear sight, not a receiver mounted aperture rear sight. However the Ross rifle would be kept for training purposes & home guard use so it was likely a holdover from their other training rifles. Also, the later No.4 MK.1 adopted in 1942 would have a receiver mounted aperture rear sight, so in hindsight it was a good choice for a training rifle. Based on the stock disc this rifle was issued to A company, D District, Canadian Officers Training Corps, on January 1936. The rifle also bears the Candana Broad Arrow mark in different spots, indicating Canadian ownership. These rifles were made for .22 Short only, however a .22 Long rifle does chamber fine, & the cosigner sates he has fired .22 Long rifle out of the gun with no issue.
CONDITION: The two-piece, Semi-pistol grip wood stock is very good with various nicks, dings, dents, & scratches from use/age. There is a 1 1/2'' crack on the left side of the stock, emanating from the wrist band, has a arsenal repair with brass nail through stock. Volley Front sight base still on left side of forend, & cutout in the stock for the rear volley sight. The right cheek of the buttstock has a embedded brass disc that reads ''1/36'', ''A. COY'', ''D. C.O.T.C'', ''11.''. Right cheek is also stamped with a Canadian Broad Arrow stamp. the bottom of the wrist stamped ''Q''. The metal carries a arsenal re-finish. The blued metal finish rates 90% overall with spots of thinning, one spot on the receiver toned brown, & light speckled rust. One spot of gun metal gray & tool ding marks on the top chamber flat. The rear of the receiver has a bunch of proof stamps. The receiver band is marked with proof marks & a partial faded S/N. Receiver rear sight base marked with the Canadian broad arrow logo. The right side of the wrist band is marked with a crown over ''G.R.'', ''L.S.A.COLTD'', ''1914'', ''SHT.LE'' (''LE'' is over-stamped ''.22''), ''III''(marking lined out), ''I.V.*''. The top chamber flat is marked ''B.S.A.'' under their three stacked rifles logo. The right rear sight protector is marked ''W.P.''. safety lever marked with a worn ''III''. Other metal parts have small proof marks. S/N matching bolt, S/N mismatch forend nose cap. The bore is excellent. Its bright & shiny with little visible wear. The barrel holds a blade front sight with protective ears, a barrel mounted, elevation adjustable U-notch rear sight marked 2 to 20. Also has a receiver mounted Cooey 10a, deep round notch with flip-up ladder aperture rear sight. Side base marked 0 to 9, ''II'', & ''H.W.C.'' in a circle for the Howard W. Cooey company. Ladder marked 2 to 12. The buttstock carries a brass trapdoor buttplate, has a few dings & patina. Marked with a proof on the upper extension. Nothing inside trapdoor. Rifle has both bottom sling loops. A beautiful example of a intra-war Canadian training rifle. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 800 to 1600
