Birmington Small Arms Co. (B.S.A. Co. Limited), SHTLE III star (No.1 Mk.3 Star SMLE), Cal: .303 British, MFG: 1918, S/N: 77572 ( I serial block), Bolt action rifle, 25 1/4'' barrel. The two piece, semi-pistol grip wood stock is good with numerus nicks, dings, dents, & scratches from use/age. 3 missing chunk of the upper handguard, by the rear sight. This was a official English modification to the handguard done in the late 1950s when one ear or both ears around the rear sight were damaged (common as they were a weak point) & a replacement was not available due to shortages as they were phasing out the SMLE rifles. They would just trim the handguard back & then breaking was no longer a issue. The right cheek has a hole were a unit disc was, & is hand etched WS. Bottom of the wrist has a couple worn cartouches & stamped X. The bottom of the forend, just behind the bayonet lug is marked with a old crossed out S/N, & the S/N of the rifle. The metal carries a old arsenal re-finish with some lightly faded markings & a few dings under the finish. The blued metal finish rates 90% overall with spots of wear & thinning on the corners, around the safety on the receiver, & around the bayonet lug. Some areas of thinning toning brown. The rear of the receiver is marked with two proof stamps. Right side of the receiver band is marked with a crown over G.R., B.S.A.CO, 1918, SHT.L.E., III*. Left side of the receiver marked with import stampings, the receiver band is marked with proof stamps & the S/N. The chamber flats under the handguard have more proof stampings. Safety lever marked III. Other metal parts have small proof stamps. S/N mismatched bolt. More small proof marks on other metal parts. S/N mismatched bolt. S/N matching forend nose cap. The bore is good. Bright with strong rifling but has consistent roughness in the grooves. The barrel holds a square post front sight with protective ears, & a tangent U-notch marked 2 to 20. The stock carries a brass trapdoor buttplate that has dings & wear. Nothing inside trapdoor. The rifle both bottom sling loops. A Beautiful example of a WW1 Era Lee Enfield. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 350 to 700
