Description

ROF Fazakerley, No.5 Mk.2 SMLE ''Jungle Carbine'', Cal: .303 British, MFG: August 1945, S/N: P6422, Bolt action rifle, 19'' barrel.

History: The No.5 Mk.1 Jungle Carbine was developed after jungle fighting experiences in the pacific during WW2. The troops wanted a lighter, shorter, & more handier rifle for the close range jungle fighting. It was introduced in September of 1944 with 20,000 being made. by the end of 1944 50,000 would be produced & put into service. The rifles were made at two factories, BAS Shirley & ROF Fazakerley, with BSA making just over 81,000 rifles & Fazakerley making just under 170,000 with a total of over 250,000 being made. Because of the flash hinder on the rifle, a special bayonet (No.5 blade bayonet) had to be designed. There was two models of the No.4, the MK.1 & MK.2. The Mk.1 had a finely machines rear sight that went out to 1300 yards. The Mk.2 would be a simplified sight that only goes out to 800 yards, like the rifle here. They would be first issues to British Airborne forces in Norway near the end of the war as these were the guys that would be sent to invade Japan if the war kept going. But most of their use was in post war campaigns such as the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960) were it got its nickname ''Jungle Carbine''. One issue with the No.5 Mk.1 is with Wandering zero. Britan would conduct tests just after the war on this issue that confirmed the problem & blamed the lightning cuts made in the receiver & the Flash hider on the barrel. However, modern collectors & shooters have found no evidence of a wondering zero on surviving examples. This make collectors think that the No.5 was phased out mainly because the British did not want another bolt action rifle, while most other military were designing & switching to Semi-auto designs.

CONDITION: The two-piece semi-pistol grip wood stock is very good with light nicks, dings, dents, & scratches from use/age. Faint remains of the S/N stamped into the bottom of the forend, over another worn number stamp. The wrist is darkened from hand oils. The black parkerized finish retains 90% overall coverage with spots of thinning & brown patina. These would have been also painted in a black Suncorite paint, a heavy-duty industrial paint that was baked onto the metal. Remnants of this can be seen on the bolt & other protected parts of the finish. The left side of the receiver is marked ''NO5MK1ROF(F)'', ''8/45'' & the S/N. the rear of the receiver is marked with some more British proofs. The left side of the wrist band is marked with the S/N. the right end of the barrel is stamped with import markings. left side of front sight protector marked ''M/470'', the right ''8''. Buttplate edge marked with faint British broad arrow stamp. S/N matching bolt, mismatched magazine. The barrel shank has milled grooves, bolt handle hollowed out, & the right side bolt locking lug has the lighting cut. This was done to lighten the No.5 & it confirms its a original No.5, not a chopped-up No.4. The bore is excellent. Bright & shiny with little visible wear. The barrel holds a blade front sight with protective wings. Receiver mounted, flip up aperture ladder rear sight. Elevation adjustable from 200 to 800 yards. The buttstock carries the correct steel cupped buttplate with a rubber recoil pad. Metal has mostly toned brown with roughness, some Suncorite paint remains in protected areas. The rubber recoil pad had hardened. Rifle has both sling loops. Rifles comes with the correct No.5 Blade bayonet with its sheath & frog. Markings on blade are worn. Bayonet guard & pommel have green paint. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 500 to 1000
