Description

Remington, M1891 Mosin-Nagant, Cal: 7.62x54mmR, MFG: 1917, S/N: 700894, Bolt action rifle, 31 1/2'' barrel.

HISTORY: During WW1 Russia was in dire need of rifles, they were buying up old surplus arms & contracting with whoever to make Mosin's. In 1915, the Tsars emissary ordered 1.5 million M1891 Mosin Nagant from Remington. Most of the rifles would be delivered to Russia before the Tsars government was overthrown by the Bolsheviks. They would default on then contract claiming the guns were substandard. This cancelation of the contract almost ran Remington Bankrupt. The US government wanted to keep the huge Remington factory in production so that the skilled workers would remain until production of the M1911 could begin. In order to do this the government stepped in & bought the remainder of the guns, still at a big loss for Remington. The U.S. was in short supply of small arms at this time so the rifles were sent to national guard units, various state militias, & training groups, these rifles were marked with a flaming bomb US or American eagle stamp. They were designated Russian Three-Line Rifle, caliber 7.62mm. These rifles were sold off as soon as other options in .30-06 came available. This rifle is stamped on its barrel with five punch marks arranged like the five side of a die. Not much is known about the origins of this marking, other than it mostly appears on rifles that were shipped to Spain & used during the Spanish civil war. However, this marking has also been found on a few examples that never were used in the civil war like post 1937 MFG Mosins, & Finnish Mosins (Spain never sold Finland any Mosins).

CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is very good with various nicks, dings, dents, & scratches from use/age. One larger gouge on the right side of the toe. The metal sling well escutcheons are proud to the wood. The upper handguard has a 1'' crack at the rear, a 4 '' grain pop in the middle, & a 2 '' crack on the end. The rear & end of the upper handguard have more small chips & cracks. The metal has a arsenal re-finish & rates 87% overall with spots of wear/thinning & light speckled brown patina. markings are slightly faded from re-finish. The top of the receiver band is marked with a Russian imperial eagle over a Cyrillic ''P'', this means the rifle passed Russian inspection at Remington when it was made, not a indicator that it made it to Russia. The barrel shank is marked with another Russian imperial eagle over a Cyrillic ''P'', ''REMINGTON'', ''ARMORY'', ''1917'', ''NO'', the S/N, a ''0'' stamp just under the S/N, two small circle proofs, & five punch marks arranged like the five side of a die. The upper receiver tang is marked ''1'', ''C''. All parts are S/N mismatched; bolt is a mix of Tula & Izhevsk parts. The bore is good. Its bright but with thinned rifling & some roughness throughout the bore. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a Konovalov V-notch rear sight. Sight markings are in ''Arshin'', a old Imperial Russian measurement. It equals to about 28 inches per Arshin. The stock carries a steel buttplate, starting to tone brown. Has both sling wells. Rifle has cleaning rod. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 400 to 800
