Description

German/ French, I.G. Mod 71/95 Dovitis-Uruguay Mauser, Cal: 6.5x53.5mmSR Daudeteau. MFG: 1881, S/N: 92053, Bolt action single shot rifle. 31 1/2'' barrel.

HISTORY: The story of this rifle starts with Antonio Dovitiis, he was a Italian tailor and merchant of military supplies in Montevideo, who wound up with the job of procuring some new arms for the Uruguayan military. He got a bunch of single shot 11mm Mauser 1871 rifles, obsolescent by the 1890s. In 1895 he made a deal with the St. Denis arsenal in France to re-barreled 10,000 Mauser 71 rifles to the new French 6.5mm Daudeteau Cartridge, a high velocity smallbore, smokeless round. When they were made they were switched from rifles to carbines, carbines to rifles, & no rematching of parts made, making most of them having mixed parts. When Uruguay received these rifles they were not too please & wasn't really what they were looking for. They were quickly scrapped & Uruguay made some room in their budget & bought new M1895 pattern Mausers. A unique rifle with a mix of German & French markings for the Uruguay army.

CONDITION: The straight wrist wood stock is good with numerus small nicks, dings, dents, & scratches from use/age. Two 1'' cracks on the top of wrist, emanating from the receiver tang, as well as some small chips. Two small end grain cracks at the toe, one on each side. The right cheek of the stock is handed etched ''B'', & stamped ''43'', ''15''. One small cartouche on the belly of the buttstock, just in front rear sling mount. bottom of the wrist marked with a faded ''F'' over a crown on top of a ''O''. the bottom of the forend, between the barrel bands, is stamped ''13''. The metal has toned to a gun metal gray with brown patina setting in. The receiver was left in the white (unfinished) from the factory. Spots of roughness/pitting around the stock line by the chamber & receiver. Brass trigger guard. The left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N, ''I.G.Mod.71.''. Right side of the receiver is marked with three Imperial German, crown over letter proofs, ''82.1881''. Dr. Dieter Storz mentions in his book ''German Military Rifles'', that the later date stamp is when it was issued to troops in German service. The top of the barrel is marked ''L.F.t.P'', ''St. Denis''. All parts S/N mismatched. The bolt body & striker body are S/N matching. The bore is excellent. Bright & shiny with little to no visible wear. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a stepped base/ladder V-notch rear sight. Base marked 2 to 10, ladder marked 12 to 20. The stock carries a bare steel buttplate, has brown patina speckling. Rifle has bottom sling loop & forward sling ring. Rifle has brass tip cleaning rod. Antique, no FFL Req - Value: 600 to 1200
