German/ French, K Mod 71/95 Dovitis-Uruguay Mauser, Cal: 6.5x53.5mmSR Daudeteau. MFG: 1884, S/N: 4773, Bolt action single shot rifle. 22 3/8'' barrel.
HISTORY: The story of this rifle starts with Antonio Dovitiis, he was a Italian tailor and merchant of military supplies in Montevideo, who wound up with the job of procuring some new arms for the Uruguayan military. He got a bunch of single shot 11mm Mauser 1871 rifles, obsolescent by the 1890s. In 1895 he made a deal with the St. Denis arsenal in France to re-barreled 10,000 Mauser 71 rifles to the new French 6.5mm Daudeteau Cartridge, a high velocity smallbore, smokeless round. When they were made they were switched from rifles to carbines, carbines to rifles, & no rematching of parts made, making most of them having mixed parts. When Uruguay received these rifles they were not too please & wasn't really what they were looking for. They were quickly scrapped & Uruguay made some room in their budget & bought new M1895 pattern Mausers. A unique rifle with a mix of German & French markings for the Uruguay army. When Dovitis bought the 71 Mauser the vast majority were long rifles, with them being converted into a mix of long rifles & carbines, just depending on what barrel & bolt they put on the rifle. This is a rare example of the few Karabiner's that were converted, noted by the ''K.Mod 71'' marking.
CONDITION: The straight wrist wood stock is very good as having a wrist break repair & being lightly sanded & refinish because of the break. The wrist repair is tight & has four wooden dowel reinforcement. One small chip repair on the stock/receiver bolt escutcheon, on the bottom of the stock. The stock also has a couple wood fill repairs dotted around the stock. The repairs & re-finish job is professional & appears to have been done in a arsenal, likely when it was converted at St. Denis. Light oil staining around buttplate. the bottom of the stock has two worn ''3'' stamps, one just in front of the trigger guard tang, one just behind. The blued metal finish on the barrel rates 94% with some spots of light thinning, mostly around chamber. The receiver was left in the white (unfinished) when it was made, but was blued at St. Denis when it was converted. The blued metal finish on the receiver rates 70% with thinning & spots toning to a brown patina. The left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N, ''K.Mod.71.''. Right side of the receiver is marked with three Imperial German, crown over letter proofs, ''1884''. The top of the barrel is marked ''L.F.t.P'', ''St. Denis''. S/N matching bolt, all other parts are mismatched. The bore is excellent. Bright & shiny with little to no visible wear. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a stepped base/ladder V-notch rear sight. Base marked 2 to 10, ladder marked 12 to 20. The stock carries a bare steel buttplate, has brown patina speckling. Rifle has bottom sling loop & forward sling ring. Rifle has brass tip cleaning rod. A nice handy carbine with a unique story & mix of markings. Antique, no FFL Req. - Value: 800 to 1600
