HISTORY: This rifle was owned by A.S. Botha of Heidelberg. Before the 2nd Anglo-Boer war he acted as temporary registrar in the landdroist (magistrate) office of Heidelberg. He also was the arsenal keeper & the secretary of the liquor commission of Heidelberg. Shortly after the 2nd bore war broke out in 1899, he applied for the vacancy of public prosecutor. A Photo of A.S. Botha can be found in Ian Uys book ''Heidelbergers of the Boer war''. A photo of this rifle can be found in Dave C George Book ''Carvings from the Veldt''. This rifle comes from the esteemed Mike Carrick Collection & comes with a bunch of his research papers, emails, letters & photos about the Gun & the history of A.S. Botha.
CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is very good with various small nicks, dings, & dents from use/age. The left flat of the stock is stamped with the S/N, just under the S/N marking on the receiver. The left cheek of the stock is stamped ''AS BOTHA'', ''HEIDELBURG''. Stamping has faded & some letters are hard to read. The blued metal finish rates 75% overall with wear/thinning showing gun metal gray, brown patina, & light roughness. More concentrated roughness near muzzle. The left side of the receiver is marked with a small German proof, ''MOD. MAUSER 1896'', ''LUDW. LOWERE & CO BERLIN.''. The trigger guard assembly, magazine floor plate, rear sight & all its marked parts are S/N matching. Bolt, rear sight, & cleaning rod S/N mismatched (''8205'' , ''13'', &''SA3440'' respectively). The bore is fair. Worn but visible rifling with roughness & spots of pitting. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a flip up ladder, V-notch rear sight marked 4 to 20. The stock carries a blued steel buttplate, toned brown with roughness. Rifle has both bottom sling loops & has a cleaning rod. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 1000 to 3000
