Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken (DWM), M1896 O.V.S. Mauser, Cal: 7x57mm Mauser, MFG: 1895-96, S/N: 3503, Bolt action rifle, 29'' barrel.
HISTORY: This rifle was part of the second shipment of M1896 Mauser rifles sent to the ''Oranje Vrij Staat'' (Orange free state) in south Africa. The first shipment of was in 1897 for 2000 rifles. The second shipment, in 1898 was for 8000 more. Some later shipments of Mausers to South Africa were blocked by the British due to rising tensions between them just before the second Anglo-Boer war of 1899-1902. These rifles were sold & diverted to Chile.
CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is very good with small nicks, dings, & dents from use/age. Two wear indents on the left side of stock above the magazine & just above the rear sling swivel. The metal at the toe is slightly proud to the wood. Faint roundel cartouche on right cheek of stock. The right cheek of the stock is carved ''FD TYSSO''. Just Infront of that, above the magazine is carved ''C.J. STEENEKAMP'' in a decorative banner with more decorative carvings around it. The metal has mostly toned to a brown patina with some thinned blue remaining in protected areas on the receiver. Metal has light roughness & light rust scattered throughout. The left side of the receiver is marked with a small circle proof, ''O.V.S.'' over the S/N, ''DEUTSCHE WAFFEN-UND MUNITIONSFABRIKEN.'', ''BERLIN''. The trigger guard assembly, magazine floor plate, rear sight & all its marked parts are S/N matching. Bolt & cleaning rod S/N mismatched (''4158'' & ''A425'' respectively). The bore is fair. Worn but visible rifling with roughness & spots of pitting. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with a flip up ladder, V-notch rear sight marked 4 to 20. The Rear notch is worn down & is almost gone. The stock carries a blued steel buttplate, mostly brown with some thin remains of blue on the upper extension. Rifle has both bottom sling loops & has a cleaning rod. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 600 to 1800
