Nagoya Arsenal (Japan), Model: Type 38 Carbine, Cal: 6.5x50mmSR, MFG: 1941-42, S/N: 79090 (5th series). Bolt action rifle, 19 1/4'' barrel. The semi-pistol grip wood stock is good with numerus nicks, dings, dents, & scratches from use/age. The right end of the upper handguard has a 2'' x 1/4'' sliver that chipped off & was glued back on, repair is tight. The rear of the upper handguard has a 1/4'' crack emanating from the rear sight. Worn wood finish is around the left side of the wrist & cheek from use. The two-piece buttstock is normal for Japanese rifles of this era, this was done to make the stocks stronger, easier to repair, & made better use of the wood to make the stock. Bottom of the wrist & the belly of the stock each have one Japanese cartouche. The metal carries a arsenal re-blue that rates 85% on the receiver & 90% on the barrel, with spots of thinned finish (& the grind marks) toning brown on the receiver, light roughness around the stock line, & light speckled rust/patina roughness. More roughness on smaller metal parts. Some markings on the rifle are slightly faded from the re-blue job. The left side of the receiver is marked with the series mark, S/N, the Nagoya Arsenal logo, & one small inspectors stamp. The top of the receiver is marked ''TYPE 38'' in Japanese, & a mostly ground off Chrysanthemum, parts of edges are still present. S/N matching blued bolt, firing pin, & front barrel band. The bore is good. Its bright & mirrorlike but with thinned/worn rifling & one spot of light roughness at the muzzle. Chrome lined bore. The type 38 originally was not made with a chrome lined bore. That would change in late 1939 with the adoption of the type 99 which had a chrome lined bore & bolt face. When they started to switch production over, the remining type 38 production started chrome lining the bores & bolt faces as well. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with protective ears, & a flip up ladder, V-notch rear sight marked 5 to 20. The stock carries a blued steel buttplate, toned to a mix of blue finish, brown patina, & gun metal gray, also has roughness/pitting scars. Rifle has both left side sling loops & the cleaning rod. Rifle appears to mechanically function fine. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 250 to 500
