Kokura Arsenal (Japan), Model: Type 38, Cal: 6.5x50mmSR, MFG: 1935-38, S/N: 39843 (23rd series). Bolt action rifle, 31 1/2'' barrel. The semi-pistol grip wood stock is good with numerus nicks, dings, dents, & scratches from use/age. The right side of the stock, just above the trigger has a 1 crack emanating from the upper receiver tang. Next to the crack is a small wood fill repair. Another wood fill repair on the bottom of the stock, between the barrel bands. The two-piece buttstock is normal for Japanese rifles of this era, this was done to make the stocks stronger, easier to repair, & made better use of the wood to make the stock. Bottom of the wrist & the belly of the stock each have one Japanese cartouche. The metal carries a arsenal re-blue that rates 90% on the receiver & 95% on the barrel, with spots of thinned finish toning brown, speckled light rust, & spots of roughness/light pitting around the stock line. Grinding marks on the top of receiver where the Chrysanthemum was are toned brown. There is some roughness/cleaned pitting under the finish from the re-blue job. Some markings on the rifle are slightly faded from the re-blue job. The left side of the receiver is marked with the series mark, S/N, the Kokura Arsenal logo, & one small inspectors stamp. The top of the receiver is marked ''TYPE 38'' in Japanese, & has grinding marks where the Chrysanthemum was taken off. S/N matching bolt & dust cover. The bore is good. Its beginning to darken, with light roughness & thinned rifling. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with protective ears, & a flip up ladder, V-notch rear sight marked 4 to 24. The stock carries a steel buttplate, toned chocolate brown with roughness/pitting scars. Rifle has both bottom sling loops, missing the cleaning rod, & comes with a RARE original S/N matching dust cover. Rifle also comes with a Type 30 bayonet with sheath, made by National Denki under Kokura supervision, has hooked quillon. The vast majority of dust covers for the Arisaka's were ditched when they were surrendered as they would rattle if it wasn't fit to the rifle, the reason they have a S/N. There was no effort made to match the right bolts & dust covers to the right rifles when they were taken as souvenirs, so they were tossed. Almost every Arisaka left the factory with a dust cover during the pre, early, & mid war times, this was abandoned on the later last ditch rifles. Rifle appears to mechanically function fine. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 300 to 600
