Mukden (Hoten) Arsenal (Manchuria) Model: Type 38, Cal: 6.5x50mmSR, MFG: 1939-40, S/N: 5064846 (no series). Bolt action rifle, 31 1/2'' barrel.
HISTORY: The Mukden Arsenal was seized by the Japanese army in September 1931. They would recover over 200,000 rifles & just over 3 million rounds of ammo that was stored at the arsenal, & they would turn the production of rifles over to Type 38 production. When the Japanese took over it was renamed to the Mukden Army, Inc. & was owned 50/50 by the puppet Manchukuo government, & Japanese companies Mitsui and Okura. In 1938 The Japanese government took over all the shares of the company & would rename it again to the Hoten Arsenal (Mukden was still used in English documents). Production would run from 1932 to Early 1944 when Hoten switched to Type 99 production, making them the last arsenal to produce the type 38. Many Type 38 rifles would return to the arsenal after WW2 this time owned by the Chinese. This time to re-chamber them to 8mm Mauser, the Chinese standard cartridge at the time. The Mukden Arsenal would make around 148,000 Type 38 rifles from 1932-44. Compared to the total production of 3.5 million rifles makes these hard to find.
CONDITION: The semi-pistol grip wood stock is very good with various small nicks, dings, & scratches from use/age. The left cheek has two gouged spots. The two-piece buttstock is normal for Japanese rifles of this era, this was done to make the stocks stronger, easier to repair, & made better use of the wood to make the stock. Bottom of the wrist has a Japanese cartouche. The heel of the buttstock stamped ''41''. The metal carries a arsenal re-blue that rates 95% on the receiver & 97% on the barrel. The receiver has grind marks on the Chrysanthemum & wear/scratch marks from the dust cover. Some markings on the rifle are slightly faded from the re-blue job. The left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N, the Mukden Arsenal logo, & one small inspectors stamp. The top of the receiver is marked ''TYPE 38'' in Japanese. & a partially ground Chrysanthemum. The rear receiver bridge is marked with two partial circle inspection stamps. The rear of the barrel is marked with three small stamps. S/N matching bolt, dust cover, & front barrel band. Firing pin only marked bolt component, does not match bolt body. The bore is very good near excellent. Its bright & mirrorlike with only minor roughness. Chrome lined bore & bolt face. Type 38s originally were not chrome lined but once Japan adopted the type 99 with its chrome line bore & bolt face, they started chroming the bores & bolt faces of the type 38s. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with protective ears, & a flip up ladder, aperture rear sight marked 4 to 22. The stock carries a bare steel buttplate with a light speckling of patina. Rifle has cleaning rod, both bottom sling loops, & comes with a original S/N matching dust cover, does not rattle when bolt is closed. A very nice high condition Mukden Arisaka with a RARE original S/N matching dust cover. Rifle appears to mechanically function fine. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 500 to 1000
