Description

RARE!!, Nagoya Arsenal, Type 99 Long, Cal: 7.7x58mm, MFG: 1939, S/N: 6054 (no series), Bolt action rifle, 31 1/2'' barrel.

HISTORY: When Japan was switching from the type 38 to the type 99, there was a toss up on the barrel length to produce. The type 38 had a long barrel & for the cavalry & special troops, a carbine was made. To help ease manufacture & make the rifles handier for main line infantry, Japan would start testing a short rifle concept. The US & Britain adopted this with the M1903 Springfield & the SMLE respectively. This would enable Japan to ditch the rifle & carbine concept & just produce one rifle pattern for everyone, drastically easing logistics & made the guys who before carried the longer rifles happy. Testing would ultimately prove there was a negligible effect on accuracy in its effective firing range, compared to the benefits of switching to the shorter barrel. The final decision to switch would not be made before production of the type 99 began in the summer of 1940 at Nagoya Arsenal & the commercial firm, Toyo Kogyo. 38,000 total type 99 long rifles were made, 30,000 at Toyo Kogyo, & 8,000 at Nagoya. Production would run till the spring of 1941 when production shifted to the short rifle. It is speculated that once short rifle production began, the long rifles were shelved at arsenals & had their dust covers & monopods scavenged for other rifles. explaining why those accessories are rarely seen on the long rifles & why most are in pretty good condition. They would've remained on Japan's mainland & would've been surrendered at the end of the war, explaining why most of the survivors have ground off Chrysanthemums. However, some examples do have intact Chrysanthemums like this rifle here so the whole story is unknown.

CONDITION: The semi-pistol grip wood stock is very good with various nicks, dings, dents, & scratches from use/age. A few deeper gouges on the pistol grip & buttstock. The two-piece buttstock is normal for Japanese rifles of this era, this was done to make the stocks stronger, easier to repair, & made better use of the wood to make the stock. The belly of the stock has a couple worn cartouches. The blued metal finish rate 94% overall with spots of light thinning, a few light scratches, a only a couple spots of brown patina speckling. The left side of the receiver is marked with the S/N the Nagoya Arsenal Logo, & a small inspector stamp. The receiver band is marked with a intact chrysanthemum, & ''TYPE 99'' in Japanese. S/N matching bolt. Root of bolt handle & extractor are S/N marked. S/N matching front barrel band. The bore is excellent. Its bright & mirrorlike with little to no visible wear. Chrome lined bore & bolt face (the type 99 was the first Military rifle to have a chrome lined bore). The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight without protective ears, & a flip up ladder aperture rear sight with the anti-aircraft sight wings, the ladder is marked 3 to 15, AA sight wings marked 1 to 3. The stock carries a metal cupped buttplate. Buttplate is toning brown with speckled rust. Rifle has both left side sling loops & the cleaning rod. Rifle appears to mechanically function fine. As stated, Nagoya only made 8,000 of these rifles at the beginning of the war, not leaving many left in this good of condition & with an intact Chrysanthemum. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 700 to 1500
