Description

Kokura Arsenal, Type 99, Cal: 7.7x58mm, MFG: 1939-40, S/N: 99983 (20th series), Bolt action rifle, 26'' barrel. The semi-pistol grip wood stock is very good with various nicks, dings, & dents from use/age. There is a 3'' crack on the right side of the stock, it emanates from the receiver tang on the top of the wrist & goes down the stock & wraps around the top edge. The sliver the crack created is loose. The stock has been ''Duffle cut'' under the rear barrel band. This was done in theater by GIs to fit the entire rifle in their duffle bag & take home a war souvenir without going through all the paperwork & hassle of the ''proper'' way. The cut has not been repaired & the forend piece slides back & forth. The two-piece buttstock is normal for Japanese rifles of this era, this was done to make the stocks stronger, easier to repair, & made better use of the wood to make the stock. The belly of the stock has two slightly worn cartouches. The heel of the buttstock is marked ''39'' over a lined out ''59''. The metal has a arsenal re-finish & rates 90% overall with some spots of thinned finish toning brown & spots speckled roughness. The left side of the receiver is marked with the series marking, the S/N, the Kokura Arsenal Logo, & a small set of inspection stamps. The receiver band is marked with a intact chrysanthemum, & ''TYPE 99'' in Japanese. S/N matching bolt, only root of bolt handle is marked. S/N mismatched dust cover (592). The bore is excellent. Its bright & mirrorlike with little to no visible wear. Chrome lined bore (the type 99 was the first Military rifle to have a chrome lined bore). The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight without protective ears, & a flip up ladder aperture rear sight with the anti-aircraft sight wings, the ladder is marked 3 to 15, AA sight wings marked 1 to 3. The stock carries a metal cupped buttplate. Buttplate is toning brown with speckled rust. Rifle has both left side sling loops. Comes with a period tan canvas sling, dust cover, cleaning rod & the rare monopod. Rifle appears to mechanically function fine. Dust cover is properly fitted to the rifle & does not rattle when the bolt is closed. A beautiful example of a early production Type 99 with all the original features, intact mum, & with the duffle cut is a nice example of a vet bring back Arisaka. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 500 to 1000
