SCARCE, Tokyo Juki Kogyo-Kokura Supervision (Japan), Type 99, Cal: 7.7x58mm, MFG: 1944-45, S/N: 55554 (37th series), Bolt action rifle, 26'' barrel.
HISTORY: Tokyo Juki Kogyo was a commercial subcontractor that made type 99 rifles from 1940-45. There was the main arsenals who made rifles for the Japanese army but starting in 1940, with the growing need of rifles for the war effort, private companies would get contracts to make rifles, they would be under the supervision of officials from military arsenals & the rifles were marked with the logo of the arsenal the officials are from. Tokyo Juki Kogyo was the only company to have rifles made under Kokura & Nagoya supervision & made less than 100,000 rifles throughout the war which is a drop in the bucket in the 3.5 Million made between 1939-45. Tokyo Juki Kogyo would go on to produce industrial & household sewing machines after the war under then name JUKI. This rifle is a transitional last ditch with a mix of features.
CONDITION: The semi-pistol grip wood stock is very good with usual nicks, dings, dents, & chips from use/age. The two-piece buttstock is normal for Japanese rifles of this era, this was done to make the stocks stronger, easier to repair, & made better use of the wood to make the stock. No visible cartouches on stock. The blued metal finish rates 85% overall with some spots of thinned finish toning brown & speckled brown patina. Metal has rough tool marking under finish, this is usually in last ditch 99s as they stop polishing the rifles as much to save on time. The left side of the receiver is marked with part of the series marking. the S/N, the Kokura Arsenal Logo, the Tokyo Juki Kogyo logo, & one small inspection stamp. The receiver is missing the ''TYPE 99'' mark & has a intact chrysanthemum, this style of receiver is know as a type B by collectors. S/N mismatched bolt (all bolt parts match each other). The bore is very good, its bright with some light roughness spots & lightly thinned rifling. Chrome lined bore (the type 99 was the first Military rifle to have a chrome lined bore). The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight without protective ears, & a flip up ladder aperture rear sight, the ladder is marked 3 to 15. The stock carries a wooden buttplate secured with three nails. Rifle has both left side sling loops. The cleaning rod was gotten rid of at this point in the war & they even stopped boring out the cleaning rod channel on the stock. Rifle appears to mechanically function fine. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 300 to 600
