Nagoya Arsenal (Japan), Type 99, Cal: 7.7x58mm, MFG: 1940-43, S/N: 91621 (series mark obliterated), Bolt action rifle, 26 1/2'' barrel.
CONDITION: The semi-pistol grip wood stock is very good, near excellent as being lightly sanded & oiled. Stock does have a few small nicks & chips from use/age. The two-piece buttstock is normal for Japanese rifles of this era, this was done to make the stocks stronger, easier to repair, & made better use of the wood to make the stock. The metal finish is a mix of original blue, added on brown finish, & some spots of brown patina. Blue rates 35% on receiver & about 20% on visible parts of barrel. The left side of the receiver is marked with part of the series marking. the S/N, the Nagoya Arsenal Logo, & one small inspection stamp. The top of the receiver is marked ''TYPE 99'' in Japanese, the chrysanthemum would sit right above that. It was grounded off when it was surrendered at the end of WW2. This was done as a act of good faith to Japan & the Emperor. The Chrysanthemum marked the rifle as being personal property of the Emperor. When Japan sold rifles, they over stamped Chrysanthemum with the logo of the arsenal that decommissioned it to protect the Emperor's honor. We continued this tradition by grinding them off since it was faster & easier. S/N matching front barrel band, bolt & all its parts. bolt handle has been bent down. Top of receiver has been drilled & taped for a scope. The bore is very good, its bright with light roughness. Chrome lined bore (the type 99 was the first Military rifle to have a chrome lined bore). The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with protective ears, & a flip up ladder aperture rear sight, the ladder is marked 3 to 15. Rifle also has mounted a Tasco 6 x 32, Opti-centered, Internally Adjustable, Nitrogen filled scope. Simple thin cross reticle, image has some blur but is mostly clear & usable. Has Weaver detachable rings. The stock carries a ventilated rubber recoil pad. The upper tang of the original metal buttplate is still in the stock. Rifle has both left side sling loops. The cleaning rod is missing. Rifle appears to mechanically function fine. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 200 to 450
