R.E. Terni (Italy), M91/24 Carcano, Cal: 6.5 x 52mm Carcano, MFG: 1918, S/N: 2B8002, Bolt action rifle, 17 1/2'' barrel.
HISTORY: The M91/24 pattern of Caracno were made from M1891 full length rifles by cutting them down to carbine length & modifying the rear sight to adjust out to 1500 meters instead of 2000. During WW1 Italy learned the advantage of issuing carbines/short rifles to troops as they were lighter & handier, making them better for artillery & support troops who had other jobs than fighting with a rifle, & with the basic line infantry with the close-range trench warfare. So, starting in 1924 they would take older M91 long rifles with worn out muzzles, & convert them into the M91/24 pattern. The M91 Carcano used gain twist rifling which speeds up as it goes down the bore, this was done for reasons explained on the next lot in the auction. Cutting down the barrel makes the rifling end at the wrong twist rate to properly stabilize the bullet, leading to some accuracy problems. Even with that problem, around 200,000 were made by 1929 & they were deemed sufficient as a substitute to the M91 ''Truppe Speciali'' (Special Troop) carbines in high demand.
CONDITION: The original straight wrist walnut wood stock is very good with normal nicks, dings, chips, & scratches from use/age. There is a crack & resin repair at the muzzle end cap of the stock. Stock has shrunk/worn down over time & the metal is proud to the wood around the toe & heel of the buttstock, upper receiver tang, & some parts of the trigger guard/magazine. The left cheek of stock marked with a heavily worn/faded S/N stamping & the acceptance cartouche, illegible & only outlines visible. The right cheek of the stock has a cross in diamond symbol hand etched into it. The metal appears to of been cleaned/buffed & is mostly gun metal gray with areas of roughness throughout & some gray/brown patina. Most of the markings on the metal are faded from cleaning/age. The receiver band is marked with a ''LA'' in circle proof & another worn circle proof. The rear of the barrel is marked with the S/N, ''SG'' in circle proof, & a worn oval proof, ''TERNI'', ''*'', ''18'', ''AT'', ''FARE 27 TERNI'' in circle, this marking is from when it was made into a M91/24 rifle at Terni in 1927. The root of the bolt handle marked ''PL'' in circle, knob of bolt handle marked with a crown, & a crown over ''BNP'', these are Birmingham proof house nitro (Smokeless) powder firing proofs, meaning this rifle went through Britain at some point. The bore is Fair. Its bright with consistent roughness throughout, spots of light pitting, & worn rifling at the muzzle. The barrel holds a blade front sight with a tangent V-notch rear sight marked 6 to 15. Adjustment notches on side of the sight are heavily worn. The stock carries a steel trapdoor buttplate. Buttplate is toning to a brown patina, nothing inside trapdoor. Rifle has both bottom sling loops. Rifle is missing the cleaning/clearing rod. Rifle appears to mechanically function fine. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 200 to 500
