Description

Gardone Val Trompia (Italy), M91/38 Carcano, Cavalry Carbine, Cal: 6.5 x 52mm Carcano, MFG: 1940, S/N: RC8129, Bolt action rifle, 17 1/2'' barrel.

HISTORY: The M91/38 cavalry carbine is just like the M38 cavalry carbines just in change of caliber of 7.35mm back to the 6.5mm round, with the exception of FNA-Brescia made M91/38 cavalry carbines which went back to a adjustable rear sight seen on the M91 cavalry carbines. All of production switched back to gain twist rifling on the bores as well, seen on all models before the M38 model. This rifling speeds up as it goes down bore in theory increasing the barrel life by slowly speeding up the twist of the bullet, decreasing friction & wear at the throat of bore (beginning of rifling), while still sufficiently stabilizing the bullet. This was a problem in the development of the Carcano but later on was found to be more a problem with the powder in the cartridge & the increase of life from the gain twist is negligible. Hence the switch back to standard rifling. However, once they switched back to 6.5mm, some rifles are seen with gain twist bores. This is likely from them using up old machinery to make new barrels that were set up for gain twist, & the constant twist 6.5mm bores are from new machinery once the old stuff wore out. Just over 1.5 Million of the M91/38 Cavalry Carbines were made between 1940-45. Gardone would make the most at a 1 Million, FNA-Brescia at 330,000, & Beretta at 180,000.

CONDITION: The original straight wrist beech wood stock is very good as being lightly sanded & re-finished. Grain pops on the buttstock around the buttplate & rear sling bar. Metal is proud to the wood around the upper receiver tang. The left cheek of stock marked with a faded S/N stamping. The blued metal finish rates 90% overall with spots of thinned finish toning brown, & a light speckling of rust. Spots of rust around the stock line. The rear of the barrel is marked with the S/N, a small oval proof, ''GARDONE VI'', ''940-XIX''. The top of the rear sight block is marked ''CAL 6.5''. Both sides of the trigger guard marked with a ''7'' on the left, & a ''3'' in diamond on the right. The bore is very good. Its bright with strong rifling & only some light roughness. There is some rust in the bolt channel on the receiver & locking lug channels just before ethe chamber. The barrel holds a blade front sight with a fixed V-notch rear sight. The stock carries a steel trapdoor buttplate. Buttplate is toning to a brown patina, nothing inside trapdoor. Rifle has both left side sling mounts & the affixes folding cruciform bayonet. Rifle appears to mechanically function fine. FFL or C&R Req - Value: 200 to 450
