UNIQUE SET, Colt, Frontier Six-Shooter, CAL: .44-40, MFG: 1877-96, SN: 2402 (Butt), 405 (Cylinder), Single Action Revolver, 7 1/2'' barrel, Black powder Frame. HISTORY: The brass backstrap of this revolver is engraved ''WM. F. McCabe IT'' (IT= Indian Territory). Some research shows his birth place being Belfast, Ireland. In 1871, McCabe was employed as a civilian scout in Fort Duncan, TX. In 1873, he was a 1st Sergeant in Company B&F of the 5th Cavalry. In Sept of 1874, he was in the 4th Cavalry near Red River, TX. In 1875, McCabe was awarded the Medal of Honor for an attack on a large party of the Cheyenne Indian Tribe while in Red River, TX in 1874.
CONDITION: The authentic ivory grips are very good & solid. The grain pattern & difference in tones are appealing. There are some minor edge chips. The original nickel finish has fully worn to gun metal gray, with remnants of original nickel finish remaining on the cylinder, in protected areas. The bottom of the barrel, just in front of the cylinder pin is marked ''44'', no other visible barrel markings. The patent stampings on the left side of the frame is worn but still partially visible. There is spotting & pitting throughout the metal surfaces & a barrel ring 2 3/4'' from the muzzle. The bore is poor, dark & worn. Integral v-notch rear sight & blade front sight. Mechanical operation appears to function properly, but the action has play & the components appear to be worn from use. The normal four cylinder clicks are reduced to two. This revolver is accompanied by an 1880's beaded belt, with white, red, yellow & blue beads. The belt holds a beaded holster, beaded pouch, painted knife sheath & a small metal badge marked ''DEPT OF PUBLIC SAFETY TEXAS RANGERS'' with a Texas Star in the middle. The beaded holster has a Texas Star with arrows, ''5'' & a snake?. The knife sheath holds a 6'' blade, with bone handle. Blade condition is fair. A unique set, with accoutrements. The frontier Six shooter came out in 1877 in .44-40 rather than .45 Colt. This was done to have ammo interchangeability with the popular 1873 Winchester to boost sales. This pistol has a black powder frame which uses a set screw to lock the cylinder pin & not a push button. It was introduced in 1892, but was not fully implemented until 1896 with old frames & parts being used up. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 2500 to 4500
