Description

Smith & Wesson, First Model Schofield (U.S. Military Marked), CAL: 45 S&W, MFG: 1875. SN: 1267, Single Action Revolver. 7'' barrel.

HISTORY: Smith & Wesson began production of the Schofield in 1875, in their first year they produced 3,035 Schofield revolvers for a military contract, these guns were marked US on the bottom of the grip frame. The left grip is marked with an inspector's cartouche, the markings are no longer legible due to handling wear, but are still visible. The bottom of the grip frame is marked US. The US stamp is still visible and legible, but has been scratched over, possibly by a soldier looking for an upgrade to his personal arsenal sponsored (unknowingly) by the US government. This gun is one of 3,035 made, who is to say how many of these first year of production Scholfield's are still around, much less in working order. This revolver would be an excellent addition to any military collection.

CONDITION: The wood grips are very good with some handling wear, small edge chips & contusions on the bottom of the grip. The blued finish on the frame rates 50% with handling wear and patina. The sides of the frame are where most of the original blue is concentrated with high wear areas, such as the front and back straps of the grip and the trigger guard, being worn to gun metal grey with a thin layer of brown patina. The barrel has worn and toned to a gun metal grey with a thin layer of patina. Bore is good, thin bright rifling with even roughness and some light pitting. Mechanically solid, the cylinder has very little play & tight lockup, the hammer and trigger mechanism functions well. Rudimentary sights, front blade sight is pinned to the barrel, rear sight is integral to the barrel latch. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 2500 to 5500
