RARE J. Stevens & Co., New Model Pocket Rifle No. 40, CAL: .22 (Probably Long Rifle, MFG: 1896-1915. SN: 24946, Single Shot, 11 7/8'' barrel.
HISTORY: these mid to late 1800's target rifles were meant to be portable, light weight, and accurate. They have stocks that slide into a dovetail cut on the bottom of the grip and are secured by a screw in the back of the grip. These antique ''Pocket Rifles'' are specifically exempt from the NFA and do not require an SBR tax stamp even though they have a short barrel and a stock. This model of pocket rifle is particularly rare, likely due to many of them being destroyed to avoid paying for an SBR tax stamp between the NFA doing into effect in 1934 and these firearms being declared exempt from such regulations in the 1972
CONDITION: The wood grips are in very good condition, solid with some light wear, small dings and scratches. The nickeled stock is good, solid with some wear around the corners exposing rusted brass. The reblued barrel rates 94% with light patina and very minor clean pitting. The nickeled frame is good, solid with some handling wear and flaking. The front and backstraps of the grip have worn to a gun metal grey with a thin layer patina and some remaining splotches of nickel. There is an area on the right side of the frame in front of the trigger where the nickel has flaked away, the bare metal there is rough and covered in a dark patina. Bore is fair, the rifling is thin and dark with light even roughness. Mechanically fair, seems to function well for the most part, when cocking the hammer, the spring tension will push the hammer past the cocked position and into the half hocked position unless you ease the hammer into the cocked position, this is likely due to a worn sear. Aperture sights, rear V notch/aperture flip up ladder sight is set in a dovetail cut on the barrel, shrouded front sight post with a secondary post on top of the shroud is set in a dovetail cut on the barrel. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 800 to 1600
