J. Stevens & Co., Old Model Pocket Rifle, CAL: .22 Short, MFG: 1869-89. SN: 1972, Single Shot, 9 7/8'' barrel.
HISTORY: these mid to late 1800's target rifles were meant to be portable, light weight, and accurate. They have stocks that slide into a dovetail cut on the bottom of the grip and are secured by a screw in the back of the grip. These antique ''Pocket Rifles'' are specifically exempt from the NFA and do not require an SBR tax stamp even though they have a short barrel and a stock.
CONDITION: The wood grips are in very good condition, solid with very minor handling wear, scratches, and dings. The nickeled stock is good with some exposed brass, scratches, dings, and rust. The bluing on the barrel rates 85% with some patina, rust speckling, and exposed gun metal grey. The brass frame is very good with very light clean pitting, scratches, and dings. Bore is poor, the rifling is still visible but is very thin and dark with substantial roughness and pitting. Mechanically good; the ejector is missing, & all tolerances are quite loose from wear but everything mechanical seems to function well. Should be inspected by a licensed gunsmith before firing. Target sights, Rear peep hole sight is set in a dovetail cut on the barrel, front shrouded sight post is set in a dovetail cut on the barrel. Antique, no FFL Req. - Value: 500 to 1000
