J. Stevens & Co., Early Model 34 pocket rifle ''Hunter's Pet'', CAL: 38-35 Stevens, MFG: 1872-84. SN: 1098, Single Shot, 12'' barrel.
HISTORY: these mid to late 1800's target rifles were meant to be portable, light weight, and accurate. They have stocks that slide into a dovetail cut on the bottom of the grip and are secured by a screw in the back of the grip, this one was converted to a target pistol. These antique ''Pocket Rifles'' are specifically exempt from the NFA and do not require an SBR tax stamp even though they have a short barrel and a stock.
CONDITION: The wood grips are in very good, near excellent condition, solid with minimal wear. The reblued barrel Rates 96% with the corners of the octagonal barrel being worn to gun metal grey. There is some clean pitting that was blued over, as well as some rust speckling and patina. The nickeled frame is very good, near excellent. The front and backstraps of the frame have small areas that have worn to gun metal grey with some rust speckling. Bore is good, the rifling is strong but very dark with even roughness. Mechanically solid, seems to function well for the most part but the barrel release button has been replaced and no longer releases the barrel. The spring and catch are still present and seem to be original but the makeshift button is too wide to work properly and will likely need to be replaced. Target sights, rear notch sight and front sight post are set in dovetail cuts on the barrel. Antique, no FFL Req - Value: 500 to 1000
