Daniel Ross, Edinburgh Scotland, Model Top hat, screw barrel pocket pistol, Cal: .45, MFG: Circa 1820's-30's, S/N: None, Percussion pistol, 1 3/8'' barrel.
HISTORY: Daniel Ross is listed in Whitelaw's ''SCOTTISH GUNMAKERS'' list as being a Gunmaker/Locksmith in Edinburgh Scottland from 1815 to 1839. He's listed on the 5th of September 1815 as a locksmith, Burgess, & as apprentice to John Sibbald. He's listed again in 1815 as being a gun maker address 64 Pleasance. ED 4, in 1819 at the address 9 South St. Andrew Street., 1838 as Saniel Ross & CO., with his last entry in 1839 with no marked address. Daniel Ross came from a wealthy Edinburgh family and the sign still hangs on his old shop. He also paid for the Ross Fountain which was a donation from him to the city of Edinburgh and is at the base of the cliffs of Edinburgh Castle. He built pistol sets, highland pistols & fine shotguns for military officers and aristocrats, as well as this pocket pistol here.
CONDITION: The smooth walnut grip is good. has some vice marks, dings, & scratches. there is a '' crack emanating from the upper tang. Grip is slightly loose & has play back & forth. Metal is slightly proud to the wood at the tip of the lower tang. Metal medallion in back of grip marked with two script letters. The metal has toned to a gun metal gray with light patina in protected areas. There is light roughness from use around the nipple. All sides of the frame, end of the barrel, trigger guard, lower tang, & safety button have ornamental engraving. The hammer has been engraved to look like a fish. The left side of the frame is marked ''ROSS EDINBURGH.'', marking is faded from wear. The bore is fair, has rust with roughness & light pitting. The barrel holds no sight. Has flipping nipple cover & safety for hammer in full-cock. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 500 to 1000
