Description

RARE Colonial Spanish Military Cavalry Pistol, Model 1801, CAL: .72, MFG: early 1800's, SN: NONE, Flintlock Pistol, 9'' barrel.

HISTORY: During the last several decades a few of these pistols have come to light in Texas where they had been in families for generations as a symbol of the Alamo. Many of these brave men were themselves of Mexican birth, but fought for freedom against Santa Anna in The Battle of the Alamo. This particular pistol has a similar lock style as the Miquelet, but this style is referred to as a Madrid lock aka AL La Mode lock. It is a Spanish Military style lock. The difference is that the standard Miquelet lock have the mainspring on the outside, while the Madrid style lock has the mainspring on the inside of the lock. These locks were the exact same lock used on the Spanish musket of the same period. It is very likely that Spanish forces would have used this pistol in the colonial period & that some of the guns could have been used in 1836 in the siege of the Alamo either by the Mexican Army or in the hands of individual soldiers who obtained them during the earlier rebellions against Spanish rule. Additionally, this is a very historic pistol associated with The Battle of the Alamo, Mexican War, the Texas War of Independence & the California Insurrection. Normally, these pistols were issued to Mexican officers and enlisted men.

MARKINGS: The right lock plate is marked ''DVI (1)''?.The makers stamp is behind the hammer, but not legible due to how deep it's set. There are no other visible markings on the pistol.

CONDITION: The original wood stock is good & solid. There are a few cracks ahead of the lock plates, alongside other scratches, scrapes & dings. The brass trigger guard, backstrap/ grip cap & forend cap have all aged to a dark gold tone. The barrel, side plate & lock mechanism have all worn to gun metal gray, with consistent spotting toned to a brown patina. Bore is poor, dark & rough. No sights. Ramrod present. A really neat piece with a great history. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 2000 to 4000
