Sharpe, Trade Pistol, CAL: 60 SB, MFG: 1811-31 (Post 1813), SN: NONE, Percussion Muzzleloader Pistol, 8'' brass barrel.
HISTORY: John Sharpe was a prolific maker of export-quality guns & pistols from 1811 to 1831. Cheap flintlock belt pistols, often with brass barrels marked ''EXTRA PROOF'' by Sharpe are fairly common. They were normally used as ship weapons & for personal defense. Sharpe was not one of the original sixteen contractors for the war, but he clearly was either a subcontractor or a Board of Ordnance maker just after the War of 1812. Sharpe apparently had contracts with the North West Company & other trading firms around 1818, to supply N.W.C with guns.
MARKINGS: The top of the barrel is marked ''EXTRA/SHARPE/PROOF'', the left side of the barrel has British proofs & asterisk stamps. The right side plate is marked ''SHARPE''. The trigger guard is engraved with a simple floral pattern. The side plate & hammer also display simple decorative engravings. Blank shield nameplate on the top of the backstrap.
CONDITION: The original wood stock is good & solid. This pistol has most certainly been lightly sanded & refinished over the course of it's lifespan. There are multiple smoothed contusions & dings. The barrel, trigger guard, butt cap, ramrod & ramrod guides are all brass. The brass has been cleaned. It has normal wear marks. This action was originally flintlock and was later converted to percussion. The side plate, hammer & upper tang have all fully toned a dark brown patina. Bore is fair, dark & rough. No sights. Ramrod present. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 700 to 1300
