Henry Deringer, U.S Navy Standard Model 1842, CAL: 54 SB, MFG: 1845-47, SN: NONE, Percussion Muzzleloader Pistol, 6'' barrel.
HISTORY: In July of 1845, Henry Deringer was awarded the second contract for 1,200 Navy pistols, with the first contract being awarded to Ames. Deringer purchased the original manufacturing equipment from Ames to produce his pistols. It is believed that only 300 of Deringer's pistols were accepted by the Navy.
MARKINGS: The right side plate is marked ''U.S'', over ''DERINGER/PHILADELA''. The top of the barrel is marked ''DERINGER/PHILADELA'' & ''RP''. The left side of the hammer is marked ''8'' & the right side of the hammer is marked ''J''.
CONDITION: The wood stock is good & solid. It has been repaired in a couple spots, then refinished. There is a full break ahead of the trigger guard & just behind the front barrel band. It is a fully repaired break going from the left side of the barrel, down and around to the right side of the barrel. There is a 4 1/2'' edge repair that runs the length of the right side plate, two dowels to left of the side plate screw & a couple areas of filler that have been sanded & refinished. There are other small nicks & dings throughout. The barrel has fully worn to gun metal gray & the brass hardware is excellent. The metal surfaces have been cleaned & polished, most likely done when the gun was refinished. Bore is poor, dark & rough, with pitting. No sights. Ramrod present. Antique, No FFL Req. - Value: 400 to 1000
