Russian, WW2, Model 1881 Dragoon Saber (Shashka) with scabbard, solid brass handle with grooves on grip, left side of the ricasso is marked ''DMDFGHJKLERTVUIOPASE'' around a star, ''H'', & ''5''. The right side of the ricasso is marked ''W'' over ''III'' over ''7328'' & with a hammer & sickle & star inside a circle. No other markings on blade or grip. Blade has a leather buffer. Brass handle has dark patina & rough machining manufacture marks. Blade has been buffed/cleaned leaving some markings partially faded. blade has nicks on spine from blocking another sword. The scabbard has a mount for a Mosin-Nagant bayonet. Russia had smaller horses & their cavalry acted more like light mobile infantry men, they would regularly dismount & engage with their rifle, hence the need for a bayonet. The scabbard is blued steel with brass attachments, has some spots of rust, blue thinning, & patina to the brass, some brass corrosion around the bayonet holders. The Shahka was introduced to the Russian military in 1834 & means ''Long-Knife''. They were the officer & cavalry sword for Russia from the until WW2. The first patterns were made without a handguard but in 1884, one was added to the Dragoon sabers to help protect their hands. This one has Soviet markings so it was made from 1918 to the 40's. Grade: Very Good + - Value: 200 to 500
