Remington, No.5 Rolling Block long export Bayonet, with sheath & frog. These long bayonets are most associated with the French contract of 100,000 rolling block rifles from 1915-16, but Remington did make large numbers of rolling block rifles & bayonets for other countries, the shorter bayonet is most associated with those. Based on the condition & it having no serail number marking, it likely did not get sent to France & stayed stateside. The blade is marked in the left side fuller ''REMINGTON ARMS-UNION METALLIC CTG. CO., REM. WORKS. ILION. N.Y.U.S.A.''. This marking indicates the blade that was made post 1910 after the Remington & UMC merger, examples of these bayonets can be found with older parts & markings that predate the merger. Remington had large stocks of rolling block rifles, parts, & bayonets already made & on hand since at this time, Military sales had nearly ceased for the Rolling block due to its obsolescence to other more modern rifles. But with the start of WW1 in 1914, every nation was scrambling for arms leading to the stockpiles of obsolescent arms being bought up to arm rear line guys & free up more modern rifles for front line use. The bayonet has smooth wood grips & an unfinished guard & pommel that are starting to tone brown. Blued steel sheath retains full deep blue coverage but has speckled rust. The black finish on the leather is peeling/flaking from wear showing raw brown underneath. Grade: Excellent + - Value: 150 to 300
