Remington, late production Spanish Model Rolling Block, Cal: .50-70, MFG: 1889-1896, S/N: None, Single shot breechloading rifle, 35 1/8'' barrel.
HISTORY: This rifle was bought in March 1900 by Winchester for ammunition & ballistic testing at their ballistic labs, wit was engraved when it was received on the barrel. It was most likely bought from storage from Remington at the time based on its condition. The bottom of the wrist has a lead plate marked ''V-14'', this is the Ballistics lab registration tag. The rifle also has a lead plate hang tag with the Winchester Museum inventory number ''1365''. This rifle along with two other .43 Caliber rolling blocks were transferred from the ballistics lab to the Winchester Museums Reference collection on January 24th, 1943. It was finally sold out of the Museum collection on June 22nd, 1967, to a noted ''Ed. Wheat''. This rifle comes with a signed letter from Geroge Layman confirming all the dates from Winchester records & a copy of the rifle listed to where it was sold.
CONDITION: The two-piece, straight wrist walnut stock is excellent with only superficial nicks & dings from handling & storage (there is one larger ding at the toe). The bottom of the wrist has the Velocity data plate added on by the lab. The receiver retains 98% of its beautiful case-hardened finish with the barrel retaining 95% of its coverage with spots of thinning & starting to tone brown & actually rates 90%. The upper tang is marked with the three line 'REMINGTON'' address & patents ending in ''1874''. The top of the barrel, between the rear & middle bands is engraved ''43 Spanish Rec'd Mar. 21 1900. W.R.A.Co.''. All three barrel bands marked ''U'' on the left side. The bore is excellent. It's bright & mirrorlike with little to no visible wear. The barrel holds a small barleycorn front sight with a stepped base/ladder V-notch rear sight marked 2 to 4 on the base & the ladder is unmarked. The stock carries a steel buttplate, toned to a mix of thinned blue, gun metal gray & brown patina. The rifle has both factory sling loops,& has the cleaning/clearing rod. Mechanical function appears solid. A unique example of one of Winchester buy a rifle from one of their biggest rivals Remington for testing to make sure they were making the superior product. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 1500 to 3000
