RARE & ENGRAVED Remington Custom Shop Rifle, Model 8 D Grade, .35 Rem Cal, MFG. 1913, SN: 30905, Semi-Auto Rifle, 22'' barrel. This rifle, invented by John Browning, was America's first successful semi auto high-power rifle. These take down rifles were often broken down into the 22'' & 20'' halves & placed into travel cases for train rides to countryside hunts & shoots. The left side of the barrel shroud is stamped with a factory repair/upgrade code of ''OPP3'', indicating it was returned to the factory at some point for unknown repair or upgrade. The barrel jacket base also carries stamped factory repair/upgrade codes of ''WR3'' & ''CN3'', again indicating it was returned to the factory or unknown repair or upgrade. This special order rifle was likely well loved & utilized by the original owner, who sought to maintain it in preferred working order through these return visits to the factory. The rifle features a round pistol grip, high grade English walnut stock & forearm. One of the previously mentioned trips to Remington was likely to have its original schnabel forend replaced with the high grade beavertail forend that it currently carries. The stocks are excellent, with very nice figure to the grain & factory hand checkering. There are several minor scuffs, scratches & contusions to the original finish. The left side of the receiver carries a presentation inlay which is engraved ''Presented To Ernest Pardo Chicago Illinois 1919''. The original metal blue finish on the receiver rates 70%, while the barrel appears to carry a factory reblue from one of the return visits & currently rates 80%. There is thinning loss of the barrel roll stamp during barrel preparation. The receiver side panels are covered with what Remington marketed as ''rich scroll hand engraving''. Engraving is also found on belly of magazine, safety, trigger guard, tangs & barrel jacket. Bore is excellent. The receive is fitted with a Lyman 41 receiver sight, while the barrel carries screw filled rear provision & a Marbles no. 6 front sight. The left side of the receiver carries a extra screw filled hole & two screw studs that appear to be mounted from the inside, all of which could be contributed to work done at the factory during one of the three return visits. Stock carries the original checkered Remington plastic buttplate, with a small chip at the toe which does not extend into the toe of the wood. 4 round fixed magazine. A beautiful & rare engraved rifle, with an interesting history. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 3000 to 4500
