Description

UNIQUE Remington, Model 81 KRIEGER (Modified detachable clip), marked .32 REM. Cal., MFG. 1937, SN: 1860, Semi-auto take-down rifle, 22'' barrel, Rare early 2nd year production, beavertail rifle & featuring the Kreiger modification. One of the features hunters & shooters desired from Remington was a detachable magazine rather than the standard fixed mag. Remington never offered this feature in the standard model 8 or 81& thus many a gunsmith or garage fiddler attempted a conversion. Most were little more than butcher jobs that often compromised functionality. There are a few exceptions however, & the most notable is the work of R. Krieger & Sons of Mt. Clemens, Michigan. Their conversions were done using the rifles existing 4/5 round box magazine. What sets a Krieger apart from all other conversions is the outstanding quality of the machine work, an almost factory appearance. Krieger & Sons also had a gunsmith's working knowledge of the 8/81 action & knew the necessary alterations to ensure safe, reliable operation. It is not known how many of these conversions were performed, but we do know they were done in the late 1940s & early 1950s. Originally conversions were priced at $20. In 1951 Kriegers were advertised in NRAs American Rifleman, with conversions costing $25 & $12.50 per extra magazine. A Krieger is one of the few modification to an original factory rifle that does not typically detract from its value, rather most Krieger rifles demand a premium in todays collecting environment. On this rifle, the original factory flat grip wood stock & beavertail forearm are very good, however the stock's upper comb was personally altered lowering its height, eliminating the upper comb's forward point & streamlining its flow into the rear portion of the stock. The stocks have therefore been sanded & refinished, minimizing any minor handling marks or scratches to the current finish. There is some wood loss, but the wood meets up to the metal edges of the receiver in most places. There is a small missing chip to the wood at the flat edge of the pistol grip. Overall appearance of the wood is very good. The original metal blue finish rates 50% on the barrel, 60% on the receiver, with areas of thinning toning to a plum brown patina.. The receiver was previously fitted with a scope & currently carries two screw filled holes from the tapped provision. The barrel carries a standard adjustable rear sight & a Marble No. 6 ivory bead front sight. Bore is excellent. Stock appear to have been cut shorter at one time & possibly fitted with a recoil pad, which was very common practice during the era of this rifle's production. It carries a replaced Remington plastic buttplate, which is a bit oversized. LOP is 13''. Rifle carries a 5 shot detachable magazine. A quality modified & nice looking Krieger 81 beavertail rifle in the often overlooked 81 caliber of .32 Rem. FFL or C&R Req. - Value: 750 to 1500
