British, Wheeler/Tower, P-1844 Yeomanry carbine, Cal: .65, MFG: Approx. 1844, S/N: None, Percussion musket carbine, 20'' barrel.
HISTORY: The British Yeomanry regiments were Volunteer units, different than the regular army & have history with some cavalry units dating back to the 1700's. The P-1844 was a evolution of the P-1843 carbine. Both used the P-1842 percussion lock but the new carbine had improved internals, the bore sized reduced to around .66 Caliber, closer the even earlier British carbine pattern bore size of .65 caliber, along with some other small changes. These would used from 1844- early 1850's when they were replaced by snider converted .577 Enfield carbines. These were assembled by many manufactures who would have shipped them to the British ordnance for acceptance. They would have a mix of bought & mad parts by them, most having tower made locks. The makers/assemblers mark would be stamped into the belly of the stock, this one is ''WHEELER''. The ''BO'' with broad arrow mark also indicates it was accepted by the British Board of Ordnance.
CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is very good with various small nicks, dings, & dents that have been smoothed over from handling. Stock has shrunk over time leaving the toe of the buttplate proud to the wood. The real of the lock is just slightly proud to the wood but the rest of the lock & metal parts fit flush. The right cheek of the stock is marked ''BO'' with a broad arrow. The belly of the stock is marked ''WHEELER''. Just before the wrist tang is two British crown over ''10'' cartouches. The left flat of the stock is marked ''T*B''. The ''BO'' & ''T*B'' markings are partially thinned while the other cartouches are crisp. Brass metal furniture. The barrel is a mix of the original brown finish & brown patina with some scratches showing gray near the muzzle. The lock plate retains some of its original case-hardened finish in protected areas but is mostly toned gray with some spots of brown patina. The top of the barrel is marked 6 British military proofs/ inspection marks. The lock plate is marked with the Royal cypher of ''V.R.'', ''TOWER'', ''1844'', & with another small crown over arrow proof. The sling bar has a small British proof, & the cleaning rod has a faded stamp on the rod. The bore is good. It's beginning to darken with some roughness. The barrel holds a small blade front sight with a fixed U-notch rear. The stock carries a brass buttplate. plate has small nicks & light patina. Stock has a sling bar with a sling ring. Mechanical function appears solid. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 1000 to 2000
