Description

Izhevsk Arsenal, model: 1844 Percussion Musket, flintlock conversion, Cal: .69, MFG: 1838 musket, approx. 1844 percussion conversion, S/N: 18426, Percussion Musket, 41 1/2'' barrel.

HISTORY: This musket was originally as a flintlock at the Izhevsk Arsenal in 1938. It was then converted to percussion around 1844. All early flintlock to percussion converted guns in Russia were called model 1844 muskets. These were the standard arm used by Russian during the Crimean War of 1854. These were all smoothbore & the more modern rifled percussion guns were reserved for company skirmishers, Rifle and Cossack units. These Muskets would also be Used during the American Civil war, mainly on the side of the confederates. Some would be left smoothbore, & some were bored with rifling. Increasing the bore to around .70 Cal, not all of them were exact. The stock is beautifully carved from the buttplate to the rear barrel band with Native American Kwagulth style symbols. This was done by the famous John Livingston. He is a adopted Kwakwakawakw (Pacific Northwest Coast Indigenous people) master carver born in Victoria B.C. he trained under the Head carvers at the Royal B.C. Museum during the 1960s, Henry & Tony Hunt. John would go on to be a master wood carver & would work on many large totem Commissions with Tony & Calvin Hunt. John would be hired by the Canadian Government to maintain historic carvings & totem poles. This gun comes out of the Famous Mike Carrick Collection where he obtained it from The Museum of the Fur Trade in Nebraska. It is described documents that comes with the gun that the museum acquired it in the late 70s, early 80s. At this time it was partially carved. John Livingston was doing some collecting work for the museum at this time & they would as him if he wanted to finish the carving on the stock, which he said that he could. When he received it he said the carving design was modern & he would like to do it over in an older style. The museum said yes & he would go to work re-carving the stock. The final result is what we have today. A unique gun with a long & interesting history.

CONDITION: The straight wrist wood stock is very good with small nicks, dings, & scuffs. Stock has dark stained spots on the forend. multiple small crack repairs at the bottom end of the forend. The stock is beautifully carved from the buttplate to the rear barrel band with Native American Kwagulth style symbols. The metal has toned to a mix of gun metal gray & brown patina. The lock plate is marked with the Cyrillic letters ''IZb'' over ''1838''. The ''IZ'' is for Izhevsk while the ''b'' is a sign that pronunciation is hard, it called a ''tvordiznak'' & was used in old Russian before 1918 when the Bolsheviks took over & modernized written Russian. The rear of the barrel is marked with the S/N, ''E'', ''S'', ''B'', ''1838'', & a couple more small proofs. The year of MFG ''1838'' is stamped almost every part, its on the barrel bands, ramrod, both trigger guard tangs, & the left side plate. The upper tang of the buttplate is marked with a crown over a Russian imperial eagle, ''12070''. The bore is good. Its bright with some roughness & visible striations throughout the bore. The barrel holds a brass blade front sight with a barrel tang mounted notch rear sight. The stock carries a brass buttplate, has wear & patina. bottom buttplate screw has pulled out of the wood & the buttplate is loose. Rifle has both bottom sling loops & ramrod. Antique/Muzzleloader, No FFL Req - Value: 2000 to 8000
