Springfield Armory, M1879 Trapdoor rifle, Cal: 45-70, MFG: 1882, S/N: 174139, Single shot breechloader, 32 1/2'' barrel.
HISTORY: The model 1879 introduced the ''buckhorn'' rear sight to the Springfield as well as some other small internal tweaks to the breech block & action. This sights notch leaf was windage drift adjustable to allowing better zeroing of the rifle, it was not on the fly adjustment as seen on the later Buffington rear sight. The breech blocks would continue to be marked ''1873'' but that marking was removed from the lock plate. This model is also the Transition of the master Armorer at Springfield from Erskine Allin (who came up with the trapdoor conversion) to Samuel W. Porter. This can be seen with both ''ESA'' & ''SWP'' cartouche's seen on the rifles. These were still officially called M1873 by the military but collectors named them M1879's after the year the new sight & modifications were introduced. Older M1873 rifles would also be fitted with the new sight when they went in for refurbishment.
CONDITION: The straight wrist walnut stock is very good as being lightly sanded & re-finished. Stock has small nicks, dings, & scratches from use, older marked are smoothed over from light sanding. The metal is proud to the wood at the toe & lower wrist. The left flat of the stock has the acceptance/inspector's cartouche ''SWP'' over ''1881'' inside a box. The bottom of the wrist is stamped ''?.D.R.'' (first letter faded) & the ''P'' in circle firing proof. The metal has toned to a mix of gun metal gray & dark gray patina with light roughness across the metal. The breech block is marked ''US'', over ''MODEL'', over ''1873''. The rear of the receiver has the S/N. left side of the chamber marked ''V'', over ''P'', over a eagle's head, over ''P'', & the top is marked ''R''. The lock plate is marked with a American great eagle next to ''US'', over ''SPRINGFIELD''. Both barrel bands are marked ''U''. upper extension of buttplate marked ''US'' & ''55''. The bore is good. It's bright & shiny with lightly thinned rifling & spots of roughness/ light pitting. The barrel holds a barleycorn front sight with the M1879 notched ramp base/flip up ladder ''buckhorn'' rear sight. The stock carries a blued steel buttplate. Plate was buffed cleaning with light pitting scars. Rifle has both factory sling loops with the third stacking loop & the cleaning/clearing rod. Mechanical function appears solid. Antique, No FFL Req - Value: 600 to 1200
